Went up to Seattle to visit some family

I'm walking into a building downtown and notice a woman with kids behind me and it's raining . I'm a southern gent so I hold the door open for her and then I don't receive a thank you . Instead , i recieve a shocked and puzzled look as if I were being weird or showing stalkerish behavior. I thought to myself, ok maybe I do look scary with my woodland camo on and a thick arse lumberjack beard . Same day that night, I decide to go to a bar and I see a couple, the guy has a Seahawk jersey on and I ask, "You ready for the season buddy?" Dude looks around and asks , "Do I know you ?"
Idk it may just be me but is that a Northern thing ? Is being polite and friendly weird when it comes to strangers up there . Jeez I might as well got drunk off my arse and started yelling Geaux Tigers or WhoDat if I wanted those looks lol.
I like Seattle but I'm thinking maybe I should've been in Portland with the weirdos .

I've been up there a few times (including the LSU/Washington game) and never really experienced that. People were generally friendly.
More so for the LSU game, but there were a LOT of LSU fans around town.

Ive been up there a couple times, and the people were very nice and quite open to conversation. Maybe you just ran into a couple weirdo's.

Buddy of mine went up there with his family about a month ago. He said he had a similar experience in Portland and Seattle, but he said the people that lived out "in the country" were awesome people and shat all over all the yuppies that live in the metro.

People underestimate how friendly the south is.
I've seen that same freaked out look and all you can do is think "I guess I'll just go frick myself."
Don't let the hipsters ruin southern politeness.

It's called "Seattle Freeze." Not kidding. Some people are nice, but inclusion is not customary there.

It probably had more to do with you being downtown.
Fiance's family is from Seattle, so we're up there at least twice a year. Out in the suburbs people are really friendly.
In the downtown, Bellevue, and other areas? People are smug shitstains. Going to a wedding over labor day on Mercer Island...told the fiance she fricking owes me.
Then again I've found that to be the case in most large urban areas in the US.

I was up there in June and held the door for a couple ladies. One of them said that's not the hospitality you normally get around here. Now that was when I was about 2 hours north of Seattle. While in Seattle, everyone seems to not be shocked by general friendliness.

It's no different in Portland. Worse maybe. Wife and I visited Portland, considering a move, and decided "hell no", based on the people. They all seemed very... detached? Like they weren't very interested in the world and especially not people. Kind of like they were all stoned, which maybe they were. We had numerous experiences with rudeness and bad service from everywhere we went.
In contrast, New York City, which is supposed to be filled with rude people, I have actually found to be pretty charming. People are in a hurry, but not necessarily rude because they just don't give a shite about life, like they are in Portland. Unlike in Portland, people in Manhattan are generally upbeat and will speak to you, and if you go to a bar or restaurant you will get good service.

Why don't you clean up and be presentable for a change?

Call someone "ma'am" and see what happens.

A lot of people have trouble making friends in Seattle. As one poster mentioned, it's called the "Seattle Freeze."
People there have been called polite, but not friendly.

That seems like more of a big city thing than anything else.
