It seems cyanogenmod now has a stable kitkat for the s4 active. Looks like I'm rooting and romming my first phone this weekend!

I definitely plan on checking out sitecom

there's not much to see..at all.

you install it, run it and it will show you all your windows media shares.

then you can navigate to whatever you want to play.

in my case i have tons of BD rips in MKV format and so i also grabbed 'mx player' and it plays those giant 1080p files SOOO SMOOTH.

this was on a nexus 4. the nexus 5 experience is even better.

The one app I'm on lately is

Zello - an app so badass, it topples governments

about 95% of it is me and my drunk arse friends fricking around with each other...about 5% of is actually used with co-workers

& then: I dont know why anyone wouldn't like PLEX

I paid the one-time lifetime fee for Plex Plus/ Plex Pass and I am having no problems

I Chromecasted movies from my media server at home to a TV here in my office with my phone...loving it

That reminds me. MightText is freaking amazing!

You can text from the computer. It is awesome for work.

I second this. It's not a different app to use for texting like Textra or something is. You install it on your phone and sync it with an account. You then sign into that account in your browers and boom. Chrome even has notifications for when messages come in.

did you miss the part where i'm playing my 1080p MKV files??

trust me, you wouldn't want to attempt to stream a 38GB movie over 4G.

your point is taken, but i don't really need to stream movies.

for music, i sync with google music so i'm good there in a pinch although i prefer my lossless FLAC files when i'm on my local network at home.

google play transcodes everything to 320kb i think.

Got Heeem

why?

wont it require you to also install some kind of BS media server on your PC?

i dont need the extra hassle or passive-aggresive 'pro' version nagware that limits what i can do.

sitecom, install it and forget its there.

I just don't get the hate when you appear to not even know Plex has the ability to direct play files and you can get a very nice experience without ever giving them a dime.
