Grandfather was greedy, selling out to a corp
My grandfather didn't sell out to a corp. He ultimately couldn't make any money due to milk prices and cost of feed etc. for running the farm. He sold his cows to a few neighbors and some of his farm equipment. He kept some beef cows for family and that was it.
Your statement tells me that you know nothing about farming or how to run a farm business.

Scale??
Dairy and Poultry are probably worse than row crop on losing money.

When solar goes the way of coal because the government doesn't need it, what will happen to all that land? Who will dispose of all those solar panels and equipment? Can't go back to farming it.
All contracts require an escrow account that must be 100% funded within five years specifically to cover equipment disposal cost. Developers are also required by law to complete existing conditions geotechnical soils reports to prove the land is back to pre-solar conditions, post contract. So it can go back to farming after the 30yr contract but will it, probably not.

Farmers told us it's because a handful of corporations have taken control of their markets to ensure they always win, and farmers barely break even.
For those that don't know, farms, ranches, and food production is the new investment vehicle for the uber rich. These "corporations" are owned by rich stockholders.

Big pharma implemented this model a long time ago, seems it is permeating America into other sectors

You said that corps caused his downfall. Explain to me how "they" manipulated milk prices. Tell us how. Did FedGov stop buying cheese to cause a price collapse? Who made the prices of feed go up? Explain the conspiracy.
No shite, that's why I'm asking questions.

quote:Yes, but the power of the multi national companies was much less in the 80s, but hell, if a farmer went out of business in the 80s...they were just really bad at it, like retarded people could make bundles of cash.
Farming has always been a gamble. I remember in the 80's many farmers going belly up. Nothing new.
We need a system that supports local farming when needed, we dont need to squeeze the local guy to prop up the conglomerates. I dont like subsidies, but we need to insure our food sources stay within this country as a measure of security.

Why is corporations in quotes? Having shareholders is what happens when you're a public corp. You can buy a share in a fund I own for $27. The one fund I'm looking at now in my Schwab account owns portions of 755 different companies, and probably at least 10% of those have a farming impact, through energy, chemicals, fertilizer, mining.
I'm not even OT rich, let alone uber rich. You can buy shares too. But continue sky screaming about how the little guy can't get ahead. Shake your fist like you mean it. Nothing bad that happens is your fault, it's all someone rich somewhere.

I know of a sugarcane farmer who went on the news to cry about how they don't make enough money to keep up with the bills but yet, lives in a $600K house, drives a maxed out F-250 (over $100K), and wife drives a top of the line Porsche...
Not saying all are like this, but there are more than a few. I do feel bad for the one's that are having trouble making it.

You realize Blackrock has to make an ROI/ profit right?
companies trying to create a monopoly don't worry about profits in the initial stages
their goal is to undercut competition on prices and put the competition out of business

What? My point is our food supply is increasingly being consolidated and controlled by corporate america and that's not a good thing, at all.
It's just basic economics. Less suppliers = less market competition = higher prices and population control. The end-goal is government-controlled food production and socialism/communism.

This isn't even true.
You showed your ignorance from the very first post.
I don’t understand why you people insist on trying to talk intelligently about things that you don’t know anything about you’re so fricking arrogant that you will argue with somebody who actually does something for a living or that’s their trade and it’s not yours , but yet somehow you know more than they do.
It’s amazing
Hey..go find the nearest mirror, stare into it and do something about your life differently than you’re doing today ..that’s my best advice to you

A revised updated farm bill would be a nice start in right direction

Campbell's soup was founded in 1869. ConAgra was founded in 1919. Where do you shop? Rouses has 1.5 billion in revenue, are they bad like Kroger? Do you buy any General Mills products? Huge conglomerate founded in 1856. Keep trying.

What? You're arguing for more government intervention to "help little guys" and more government intervention always reduces freedom. There's nothing stopping you from hitting up a farmers market.
Remove all subsidies, including government funded crop insurance. Kill price caps and floors and all import/export restrictions.

When did he do this? Link the story
Because Sugarcane has been making the most money for a while now and more land has been going into cane each year. a handful of rice farmers in vermillion parish just switched to cane this fall
