I guess i’m Just wired. N College I was introduced to ideas and info I would never had access to otherwise. Why are so many of you threatened by new and novel ideas? You simply pass your time in your nice safe cultural cocoon totally oblivious to data and information that disconfirms your pet “theories.” Grow the frick up

The Obama administration tried to do this. It was blocked by Republicans. Now we have someone who ran a fake for-profit college as President.

This is a profoundly ignorant comment. First there is nothing close to the degree that you spewed out to try to make a bad point. Second, ANY degree from an Ivy League School will open doors for the graduate that aren't open for graduates from every other school.
Name any real Harvard degree program and I guarantee you there are thousands of graduates with that degree making huge salaries in their field.

We tried to explain this to a cousin of mine who went to MedQuest and paid thousands of dollars out of pocket to be a fricking dental assistant. Because she couldn't understand why the only jobs they offered post-grad (as part of their "guarantee") were part-time, low wage jobs. As a single Mom with a kid, she could've went to a Community College for free and got a better degree with an Associates. Some people just buy into the bullshite that's sold by those for-profits.

ok fine since you want to nitpick....
The average cost to attend Harvard is 67,000 per academic year...that equates to a $268,000 Bachelors degree.
I also chose a major right off the university website... You can obtain a degree in studies of women, gender, and sexuality.
So you mean to tell me spending a quarter million dollars on a degree in studies of women, gender and sexuality is NOT a waste of money??

And employers will still aggressively pursue this student because they graduated from Harvard.
If someone wants to get a degree in lesbian pop culture, then let them go. It’s their life and decision, not yours.

nothing.
There is a problem with student loans.

well of course. But these are the same people taking to every outlet they have saying how unfair their student debt is. It's totally their choice, but can you not agree that it's a financially stupid one?

The problem is, it isn't just liberal arts majors that are having issues with student loan debt. To pass it off as such is either being naive or willfully ignorant of the larger issue.
It's a combination of jobs requiring degrees that shouldn't (i.e. a secretary/admin asst. position requiring an associates degree or Bachelors) and the cost of tuition rising to a point that even if it's a job that legitimately needs a degree that it's not offsetting the cost of the degree(s).
Teaching is a good example of the Catch 22. People want teachers to be better educated and to draw better people to the profession. A lot of states require, after so many years, for a teacher to pursue their Masters in order to keep their certificate. But teacher pay remains the same or is being cut and in some states benefits that offset the lower pay are also being cut. It's reaching a point where you're better off going into another profession if you're going to have to pursue a Masters or more to just maintain certification to teach.

Retail price isn’t the same as out of pocket expense.
At Harvard, most of, if not all have scholarships/grants that cover the base cost of tuition.
Many other top tier universities are the same way.
You can list tuition as $65,000 but the student may pay 1/2 or often much less.

First, because Harvard is flush with foundation money, any student who comes from a family making less than 150K a year pays next to nothing to go to Harvard. Under 60K they pay nothing.
Second, ANY degree from Harvard is highly valuable. Every degree has jobs associated with that degree. A quick google search and I found a huge list of jobs where this degree was a qualifying degree to apply.

I agree the problem is bigger than what I explained. It's insane to see what is happening in some fields. Both of my parents are physical therapists... a field that now requires a doctorate. They have straight up said it's no longer worth it for this generation to pursue the field. It's structured in such a way that it makes more financial sense to become a physical therapy assistant.
At the same time though, we can't ignore that a great deal of these people facing down daunting debt are in the situation because of the horrible choice they made. Even if you don't spend over a hundred thousand at a place like Harvard, it can't be called wise to spend whatever it costs you on a degree with no value, and that is what a lot of college students are doing.

Did anyone in your life tell you this was a bad move?
I did the same thing, it was $30k back when I went. Similar experience, I graduated with a high GPA. Never missed a day of class.
My family was well off (marine industry), but no one had gone to college previously. I was 17 when I signed up and didn't know any better. I made the most of the opportunity, worked hard, and paid off my loan in 5 years. I've done well and made a great career. Most of my graduating class works at Walmart.
If you wanted to do well, they gave you everything you needed to succeed. Instructors were actually well qualified and really went out of their way. But if you just wanted to come in and spend $30k to surf the web, that was fine too.

Except that a PT assistant has a ceiling where a PT doesn't. I could be mistaken but PT's now are awarded a doctorate for the same amount of time your parents put in at school. They aren't going to any extra classes.
