Has anyone caught on yet that when a bank or hotel or other customer service person says:

"I need your cell phone number to send you a confirmation code to verify your identity."

That they are in fact just capturing your phone number for marketing purposes?

Think about it for a minute. If they already had your number and sent a code to it then it might prove it is you or at least someone with access to your cell phone. BUT when they have to ask for a number then it doesn't mean shite. It could be anyone's cell number. All they are proving is that the person on the phone with them is giving them a real working cell phone number.

I just had this discussion with a customer service rep on the phone and she argued at first and then it dawned on her and she seemed amazed.

You mean to tell me they’re using my cell phone number for reasons other than they say??

Uncanny

But the time they originally got your phone number was for marketing purposes?

I bought a washer/dryer from Home Depot. I bought the extended warranties. When the washer broke, the tech came out 6-7 times over a 7 week period and was never able to fix it.

I called HD and asked at what point I get my money back. He asked for my cell number and said he would get back with me. He never called back but within 2 days I was in heavy rotation on the marketing call-fest. I seldom got junk calls before.

He messed up and gave me his name though. I was able to set him up with a bunch of gifts that keep on giving.

Yeah, its not like they already sold your cell to marketers, that you gave them when you opened an account

Now when a company asks if I want the receipt emailed . . . . yeah, that's for marketing purposes

"I don't have a cell phone" or "I don't give out my cell phone" are the correct answers to that question.
