If I was you I'd install it in the garage if space allows. I can't understand why it seems that we install water heaters in the attic.
I understand it's to conserve space - but I'd rather loose a little space in the garage than have to pay $$$ labor to install one in the attic

Same thing. But he'd definitely ant a friend to help with that.
There just isn't much reason not to do it yourself and save over $500. But it's OP's money. I was just letting him know that it's an easy job for just about anyone, and that he likely has several people that have done t before and would lend a hand.

My house on the coast had a water heater in the attic. It always bothered me until Katrina. Being without power for weeks, I still had a hot shower at the end of the day. That's when I appreciated the attic install.

A good plumbing designer considers the location of the water heater or water heaters when laying out the job.
In a one water heater house locating the water heater in a central location closest to the plumbing fixtures is important. If you have a larger home with two water heaters, it's best to place the heaters as close as you can to say the kitchen sink/Wash. Machine and to say the bathrooms for the bedroom areas.
You don't want to drain your hot water pipes for a minute until you finally get hot water. It's a waste of time and of money.
Sticking the water heater in your garage may not be a good location even though it may be easier to replace and less of an issue if there is a leak. There is a trade off.

Call the gas co. and tell them you need a new HWH,that you are happy with using their gas heater but that the power co has offered you a free water heater if you switch. Is there anyway they can match that deal. It worked for me.

I install electric for $250 and gas for $325.
It's not a hard job.

Aren't they much larger and louder? Seems like some local plumbing company was running an and stating that, and that they had a certain number of "old" style ones if you would call now. Or was that just sales pitch (the bigger/louder part)?

Not "much" larger, but they are bigger than the previous models.

Yeah, that didn't make sense to me, but they said they were "much louder" and would no longer fit where your water heater used to fit, so you "better act now". People scaring old people into buying new water heaters is basically what I think it amounts to.

What you are describing should cost between $600 and $900 labor and materials if done by a reasonably priced plumber. The range depends upon location of heater and condition of existing plumbing. 40 gallon gas heater should be in the $400-600 dollar range depending on brand and warranty. Miscellaneous plumbing supplies should be no more than $75 bucks, and 2-3 hrs of labor at $75-100.
