Washing machine repair

I have a may tag washer probably 20 years old and it has just started making a very loud sound when it is agitating the clothes. Doesn't do it on spin cycle or anything. Any ideas on what to do? Bearings gone bad maybe?

At 20 years old, I'd get a new one.

There's something wrong with your agitator.

Open to that, just wanting to make sure it isn't a ten dollar fix before I do that. Hoping Napoleon sees the thread

Check the LOVEJOY Coupling.

Mine just decided not to spin anymore.

My w/d units are Maytags and are approaching 30 years old. The last guy who did repair work on the dryer said I should hang on to them as long as replacement parts are available - said new models are cheaply made. I've seen similar remarks from Napoleon.

Bearing on the drain pump is shot.

only on agitate and no other cycle and eerything works just fine?
Then it's a failing transmission.
If it happened all the time on a Maytag I would say water pump on a Whirlpool I would say coupler, but seeing that you have a belt driven unit and the noise is only when the motor is spinning clockwise and not counterclockwise i would say it's likely the transmission. Generally not worth changing. The cheapest I can get one for is like $150 and it takes two hours to install, so you are looking at $400ish to install. (with parts)
OP, it is a bearing issue, just that the bearings are inside a transmission.

A twenty year old maytag is better than anything made today not made by speed queen. New machines are made to look goood and have features you will never use, rather than just work.
If you have a Kenmore 70,80,90 series never ever toss it. Same with the older Whirlpools from 1990-2004. Hang on to them, most of the time it's an easy fix.
Even in this instance, the transmission can be rebuilt, but it's not easy.

I only mentioned that b/c mine needed new springs and a motor/belt. That thing started sounding like a jet engine taking off. A couple hundred more I could get a new washer and the wife would be happier. The latter trumped all.
I had a maytag that was about 15 years old.

where you about 6 months ago.

Was it wither a Maytag Bravos, a Whirlpool Cabrio or a Kenmore Oasis?

see my above edit. The wife trumped all. To be honest, I preferred that old Maytag to this new Samsung.

Op, the problem is likely in the tranny.
If you remove the two screws at the lower front of the unit and then pull the front of the machine off from the bottom, the front panel will come off.
The large lopsided thing is the transmission, see if the noise comes from there. If it comes from below that it's possible it is the the cam inside the main pulley.
Though the noise would be in both directions. The water pumps on these models cause a lot of noise when they fail, but it's loudest on spin.
Two types of trans on these things depending on actual model.
The herrin or UFO transmission
or one like this
if the noise is from there I would look for a replacement.

Nap - my neighbor told me that he and his wife needed a new w/d. I gave him your Speed Queen recs. The next day the Lowes delivery truck showed up and dropped off some Samsung units.

That's generally one of the cheapest fixes.
If it does not spin but everything else works, then it's almost always a lid switch.
One of the cheaper parts on a top load washer.
Front load washers won't run at all without a lid switch working so if a front load that won't drain or spin and you hear the pump motor, then you simply have a clog.
If you do buy a front loader, make sure it has an access door to the pump, never ever buy a front load washer without an access door, or you will be paying $200 for a tech to do something that normally takes a minute with an access door.

I think when people find out the price speed queen charges for what looks like 20 year old units, it turns people off.
Samsungs though, while relatively cheap, have a lot of issues. My friend had a drum split on 14 month old dryer. Two months out of warranty, if I do the job without making a cent, it will cost him $325 to fix.
I've never seen a drum split on a domestic unit.
