I’m sure everyone knew the deaths and sacrifices would be extreme and necessary, but by D-Day, the war turned pretty much against Germany’s favor by at least a year. The commies decimated them by that point in the East and things were pretty grim for them looking back logistically.

Obviously the media wasn’t as up to the minute and accessible like it is now. But other than worrying about loved ones perishing by 1944, I often think about how the general public felt about victory.

It seems that the Pacific was more of an unknown than Europe by that point.

Yeah.

Had Hitler maintained his pact with Russia and had Midway gone differtly, we would live in a very different world.

There was a shiteload of doubt before the US entered the fray. You can thank feckless leaders in the mold on Obama and Justin Trudeau for the doubt.

FDR drooled over both Hitler and Stalin- Mussolini was his idol though.

In his memoirs Arthur Miller (Death of a Salesman) wrote about interviewing soldiers in Europe for a writing project. He claimed not one ever doubted the U.S. would win the war.

This was probably after Stalingrad, when even Hitler realized Germany would lose.

It was clear Japan would eventually be defeated as early as Midway. The question was how much time it would take, and how many lives it would cost.

All that matters in this thread is whether he was telling the truth about the GIs' opinions

Same stance CNN takes.

Do you honestly take an egomaniac like Arthur Miller for his word as documentation proof?????

The majority of TD would have said let the East squabble, and let the ghenghis-khan-descendants handle it

That was never going to happen. The invasion of Poland, the war in the west, all of it, was just setting the stage for invading Russia. Russia was the ultimate strategic goal. When the advance stalled at the gates of Moscow, the professional military men knew they were fricked.

If hitler hadn’t stopped at the doorstep to Moscow because of his hard on to defeat Stalingrad then he would have conquered Russia and then he would have had all the resources needed.

He could have concentrated his efforts on China and Middle East essentially linking Italy, Japan, and Germany into 1 large group that no other country could stop.

Japan with Germany’s help could attack the US pacific coast, defeat Australia, and invade Canada through Alaska.

In the meantime Italy and Germany could have solidified their foothold in North Africa and really laid into England.

In the end it would have been the axis attacking the US through south/Central America and Canada and England being destroyed

By the time the axis could’ve been ready to invade the Western Hemisphere we would’ve built our navy to an extent that would’ve made it next to impossible for an invasion on either coast to be supplied and the odds it were wiped out en route were very high.

We had 28 fleet carriers by 1945 when we turned off manufacturing them. We could’ve had 50 by 1947. Japan had 12 and Germany had zero. How can you manage thousands of miles of supply chain without air support and in the face of what was a crippling sub effort against Japanese merchant shipping and would’ve been used against the Germans who had little merchant shipping and no transport fleet to speak of?

The other issue for both is that we would’ve had nuclear weapons which would’ve wiped out their industrial capabilities while inflicting generational devastation on both nations.

Naval bombers flying off carriers like the Doolittle raid alone would’ve resulted in the razing of German industrial capacity in a biblical reign of atomic devastation.

We still wouldn’t be recovered from that kind of war today.

Yes. The US military was a complete cluster at the start of the war. Disorganized, small and underfunded. We were also at a major technological disadvantage.
