Thats insane. At first I was wondering why there were ships in downtown until I google mapped it and i never realized that the ship channel ran that far into Houston. I followed one creek (bayou in Houston) that feeds into the channel all the way to 8 and 290

I'm not sure if they had one last week or not. It obviously wasn't this big. This will probably be upwards of $1M easily. Hate it for anyone.

Isn't this becoming a common occurrence for that channel?
This is like the 4th one in 5yrs.
There was a pretty big one in early 2010 before BP explosion I believe.

Probably not a happy day at the pollution underwriter's office.

They have 80 ships pass through this part of the channel everyday so it is a high traffic area. Spills in general are a lot more common than the general public knows. It is just a matter of the magnitude. Not to mention media has had a fascination since deepwater

March 14, 2014: A Kirby-owned barge loaded with hundreds of thousands of gallons of fuel oil collides with a rice-filled cargo ship. The company said its tow was affected by the wake of a third party ship operating at excessive speed in a critical navigation zone. No pollution was released and no one was injured. The incident is still under investigation.

Kirby wishes it was. They are "self-insured"
What do they self insure? They have a lot of risk.

They can make claims that go in excess of coverage or 20mil, but they will still be on hook for much of it

word.
thats crazy shite.
I would think that Kirby would have some some of insurance for this. Probably self insured equipment damages and personal but separate coverage for environmental liability (pollution)?
