If he was then he didn't know Brett wasn't in on it. Watch his reaction after the count and then how he acts backstage in the documentary. He wasn't as pissed as Brett but he was far more pissed than he should have been if he was just working it. If he was working it, he deserves an Oscar. I would put that right up there with Foley's staying in character after being chokeslammed through the cell (and getting knocked the frick out) in the infamous Hell in a Cell match with 'Taker.

performing is literally his job. It stands to reason he could act pissed off for a while in front of a person he helped "screw over"

With this definition, it was a work, just one of the major actors wasn't told of a change to the script or purposely given a script with a different ending. It was still scripted.
