I've been to several graduations at my alma mater and have never heard one person with an outburst. It is a private school, but each class has had a significant (15-20%) minority population, with a good portion of them being black. Never once has anyone ever broken out in applause. It is a respect thing and people either get it or they don't. in a small school with a tight knit community, no one wants to be "that guy". Some long term public ridicule would go a long way in the lower class communities. The lack of that is the common trait among all trash communities, no matter the racial makeup.
I was appalled at the first LSU graduation I attended. People were literally acting like animals over someone graduating with a 2.6 in AAS. When I attended a Southern Law graduation, I was very impressed with the civil nature. I think this reinforces the small community idea.
I'm very anti police state and I do not think the DTP charges were justified, but, like most on here, I'm very sick of people thinking that they don't have to follow the rules. liberal white parents who think their children are "special" do crap like this too. It's a selfish thing to do and the mentality in America has changed from "do what is right" to "do what is right for me". The incentives have to change somehow because the system isn't working right now.

This incident has given the offending party a chance to be a victim on TV. They probably think Al and Jesse are going to show up and champion their cause.
The publicity will die of very quick. They will then discover that nobody cares about them and their "Whatevuh, I do what I want" attitude.
The system will be paid. One arrested offender said they do not have the fine money. The Judge will set up a payment plan. This will allow them to remember the joy of screaming at graduation for a long time, with every payment.
Fining them is, however, a little over the top. Corporal punishment should be offered as an option.

Meh, at Menard graduation, a mostly white catholic school, whitey parents were just as loud and obnoxious. Fortunately that was my last HS graduation.

And by creating this much publicity on this incident, it might discourage next year's revelers from making so much noise. (But possibly not, as some people believe the rules shouldn't apply to them.)
I don't really agree with charging them, but maybe it will help with future graduations.

Wow- and people wonder why we have an incarceration crisis. It's amazing how many people in favor of "small government" rely on the state to put away people they don't like.

these people know when they do this they'll just be removed from the property. No big fricking deal to them because the damage has already been done. They accomplished what they went there to do.
Adding the possibility of a fine or arrest would greatly reduce such instances.

I'm not for arresting people for the charge of "cheering during graduation". But I'm all for the schools right to have them removed. If they do not vacate the premises, I'm all for arresting them for trespassing. Problem is these schools say to be quiet, but they have no way to enforce it. You know if you start asking families to leave, it's going to turn into a shite show. People are going to get riled up. It's easier for them to go straight to getting the police involved. It's not right, but I think that's what happened here.
