I know this dream will probably be shattered when/if I get married and have kids.

Why?
trashy, sullen, lazy assed people there, more violent crime than you'd think(although it's usually local on local,) there's so much more nicer places in the Caribbean

You better be OT Rich and not live near the locals
.

You're not going to find any work. Why do you want a wife and kids anyhow?

Me thinks it will not work well.
You can't fund a 50 year retirement with 20 years of work......unless you make movie star/professional athlete type of money.

It's not as if I don't plan on working there

Fair enough
I missed where it said "before retirement" in the title. Sounds like a kick-arse plan if you can make it work.

better develop a specialized skill set, that may be tougher than it would seem
ETA: was thinking about your OP, about being attracted to the water, when I lived in FL I lived on the water, I could come home from work, jump in my boat and be heading out of the inlet in about 15 minutes, it was great, fishing, diving, Bahamas nearby, etc., once I had kids I may as well have been living in Baton Rouge, all of that shite was pushed down the list when the kids started getting into school and associated activities

I'm not expecting to live a luxurious lifestyle while there. I just want to be at peace

Learning Japanese is a definite leg up in HI.

first step is to be at peace with yourself, wherever you are, otherwise you'll always be looking at the grass on the other side

Consider Costa Rica. Closer, cheaper. Easier to get around. Growing country with expanding tourist and retirement community. Lots of people who work from home (commodity traders, finance, writers, bloggers, etc) are moving there.
The idea is that you don't really totally retire. If you have a skill like electrician (as you said) then you can go down there and find plenty of work to keep you half busy 2-3 days per week. If you go down with some money and no debt, that's all you'll need.

The problem is cost of living. Hawaii is expensive. You should reach your peak earning in your 40's or 50's. A good percentage of these earnings should go towards retirement. The cost of living in Hawaii would take a huge chunk of that money that could go to retirement. Also, you probably wouldn't be making as much as you could if you limit yourself to a job in Hawaii.

My wife and I have this discussion fairly often. We could both get jobs in Hawaii fairly easily, but the issue is that we would get paid the same as we get paid here, yet the cost of living is much greater.

I'm doing it. I bought a beach house at St Augustine Beach. The wife and I are going to retire there in a few more years.
I would really like to live down in the Carribbean. I might do it eventually.

Don't. I knew at least 5 couples who retired there and left within a year.
Too expensive and not as cool as you would there.

yep, variety is cool, I like to do to many different things than to blow the wad on one place, renting/leasing isn't that bad, live there a year, in the mountains a year, Thailand, Caribbean, etc.

Legitimately it's not as far out of reach as you may think. Friends of mine a married couple 28 & 29, without much savings up and moved there. Found jobs there. They haven't looked back. Been there 2 or 3 years now. They don't live a luxurious life, but they make use of the outdoors for their entertainment. I don't think they have cable or anything. Only the necessities. I've never been so I can't say anything about the people or any of that.
