I am literally sitting on a lanai overlooking the Pacific Ocean at Poipu Beach in Kauai at this very moment. If you want water, great weather, nice people and a secluded feel, this is the place. Spent 4 nights at Waikiki and 3 here. Kauai kicks Oahu's butt in every conceivable category. Truly heaven on Earth.

may as well be in Houston
ETA: Kuai would probably be the place for me, I like Maui but the traffic is getting ooc, it took an hour to get from the airport to Lahaina last weekend and about the first 30 minutes was just getting out of town and I think there's only about 160k people that live there

A close friend lived in Hawaii for a year. His exact words about the place: great place to visit, terrible place to live.

There are two life paths I'm pretty open to.
1 is making a shite ton of money, forgoing some freedom to do so. You get one big vacation a year anywhere in the world and can pay for weekend trips domestically no problem, however, doing whatever you want comes later while you have a fat retirement.
2) you work a job that doesn't give you the retirement, doesn't pay a whole lot, but allows you to be mobile or travel your whole life.
I can respect both of those.
The best would be a combination of both involving computers but as of now I've missed that boat.

I can understand that. Paradise is not paradise if it's your home sorta thing.

Dude, Hawaii is the most expensive place on the planet...
You better settle for Erath or Delcambre. Maybe Meaux/Leroy

Different strokes. I had to be dragged away, kicking and screaming. The problem with a place like HI is you don't know how you'll react to living on an isolated island until you do it. Vacations don't tell the whole story. My family loved it, and so do many others. But I knew lots of people that didn't.

Join the Navy, you will be overpaid to go there. Or anywhere near the water

isolated from everyone with no distractions.
you should go there from time to time and get the lay of the land.
the groceries may be different from what you are used to.
federal and state jobs require state residency for one year.
get some job now you can live on, anything and then you can get something you can do the rest of your days and even have a wife and 2 kids and a pet macaw.
last time I looked it was an 18% pay differential for Hawaii for fed jobs, compared to the mainland.
once you scope it out, you can plan your career so you have the skills you need to get in with the agency of your choice. the Army and Navy have a ton of work there. if you are serious, read the Navy job application forms. its intense.

You'll eventually get tired of seeing the same places over and over. There are plenty of places with great beaches here.
I know several people who all moved to the carribean before their thirties. Everyone of them stayed around five years then moved back to the states. Combination of same thing every day (regardless of how nice it was) and lack of mainland conveniences ran them off. They are all back stateside. Most live on the Atlantic coast.
Point being, paradise isn't all it's cracked up to be over the long haul.
