Piss on the registers; I like self-checkout bc I don't have to deal with anyone.

Notice the key words in all of this - "UP TO" when they talk about their pay

Where in the OP or the article does it say "up to"? I can't find it, thanks

But anyway, if I was going to drive a truck I'd consider UPS. Guy I know makes $85k+ and is home every night

"The retailer said truck drivers will now make between $95,000 and $110,000 in their first year with Walmart. The company did not provide the current salary range for a new truck driver at Walmart, but said they have made an average of $87,500 in their first year."

It's not a salary job. Read between the lines of that quote - I've been driving OTR for over a decade, the recruiters in this industry lie more than they breathe regardless of what company they work for. But you're right about LTL freight, I've given thought about going to work for SAIA/Estes/etc when I get released from my current medical situation.

Most of the truck drivers I talked to back when I was a forklift operator in a warehouse tended to advise against the profession when I would ask about it. They said the long hours on the road got tiresome after so long and having to pay for and wait your turn just to take a shower at a truck stop got old quick.

There were exceptions but the majority of them said the money wasn't as much as you might think and wasn't worth it in the long run

they monitor your e-logs for "efficiency", cameras pointed inside the cab watching your every move, gravity sensors monitoring how hard you brake and turn

Our newer tractors at my company has all that except for the cameras inside the cabs, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we get them within the next couple of years.

forced dispatch so you'll never get to chose where you want to go/when you want to drive

Our drivers bid on dedicated runs every 6 months starting with the most senior driver. I know a couple of OTR companies that have dedicated runs as well. I’m surprised Wal-Mart doesn’t have a system in place like that.

Young OT’ers pay very close attention to Irregardless’ 10 really important words in the post. Yep you can go out and get that sought after or “hot” college degree and maybe be paid well to do a job. But let me assure you that the company you work for is going to demand a pound of flesh out you in return for being paid well and to have that fancy job title. Sometimes there are jobs that may pay less but you will derive great satisfaction from the physical element of the role. Humans weren’t meant to be locked either in their homes or a office cubicle all day while staring at a computer monitor. That job life can be soul sucking. Yep I know…get out of your job old man so I can get it. All I can say is be careful for what you wish for young one.

I have a neighbor that traded in office job to drive UPS rig… he is gone early, but home early enough to often pick my kid up from school with his. He loves his job, and is always posting cool sunrise photos from all over the place.

I used to be a full time driver. Nothing OTR but spoke to lots of people that did it. I have a driver working for me that drove OTR. It isn't as glamourous as they make it out to be. He was driving to California and back every two weeks or so. Sensors all over the truck to detect and hard braking or evasive driving. Big brother watching your every move. shite on that.

I'm sure. That kind of $ and liability on the company is wild.

Absolute truth, if you’re both decent earners than this income level will basically remove all year-end tax deductions.
