Irrelevant. You get tips for providing wait service. Take out doesn’t require wait service.

Lots of good, hard-working people in the service industry. Pretty shameful to look down on them, or anybody else, for that matter, who is trying to make an honest living.
I"m not looking down on them.
There are waiters out there that make $100k/yr.
Don't call me poor for not leaving a to go order tip. That isn't the norm. I leave 20% tips when i eat inside. I had terrible service last night at Sammy's, terrible, enough to not want to eat there again, and i still left a 15% tip.
I still think the tip system is absolutely stupid.
I think it's retarded that i can eat at Flemings for $200, and have to leave a $40 tip, or i could eat at outback for $40 and leave a $8 tip. Did the service at Flemings for that hour really warrant $28 more than at Outback. Did the Flemings waiter refill my drinks better, or take my order and bring my food out better?
I can go to Flemings and eat for $40 instead of $200, and the difference in the service i got was minimal if any at all, yet for some reason i'm having to pay $28 more dollars b/c i ordered expensive food and wine, instead of cheaper food and water. That makes zero sense.

We know why the system is set up the way it is - tax evasion, plain and simple.

All of this.

I never said the tipping system made sense. I actually agree that it's pretty fricky and needs an overhaul.
The tone of your first post (the one I responded to) seemed different than this one. That's all.

I don’t tip for take-out orders just like I don’t tip in the drive-thru.

Not at all comparable if we are talking about any half-decent restaurant.

Church groups suck, Pentacostals are the worst, when i waited tables we used to shut down at 10pm have 500 Pentacostals come in after hours and stay til about 1 in the morning and these cheap bastards never tipped.

She's not too bright if she's going on social media to call out a customer by name and put them on blast.
Restaurant manager isn't too bright either for giving a $735 refund for that shite either. Apology and a $50-100 gift card would've been sufficient IMO.

It is very possible that the volunteer thought tip may have already been factored into everything (this is not uncommon now with online ordering and other things).
This absolutely could have been the case. The church should have sent someone up with a tip afterward. It could have been $50 or some flat number but it needed to be done. If this were an individual throwing a party or something it would be different but the purpose of the Church is to be a light in the community and to serve the community. A church SHOULD be held to a higher standard and sometimes that means paying a little extra for a tip to smooth things over even when it may not be warranted. It absolutely is within this girl's job description to put together a large takeout order...but it was probably a lot of effort relative to what she normally does and she could probably use the extra cash. Shes not taking handouts from the government while sitting on her butt. Shes actually working.
The woman shouldnt have gone on facebook and made this public...but it was the responsibility of the Church after it was done to show some grace....you know kind of how Jesus shows us grace despite us not deserving it.

Yeah, this is never, ever okay. She was rightfully fired.

This, too. No fricking way that warrants a full refund if there was nothing wrong with the food.

Most good restaurants have an auto-gratuity for all take-out orders and large parties to prevent this kind of thing and protect the server.
In this case, the restaurant was just fortunate to get rid of a bad seed when they had the chance.

Ask any server about waiting on the sunday morning church crowd
Jesus just got 10% - no way I'm topping that act.
Kidding, of course.

The only person doing real work in a take out order is the chef and that tip isn’t going to him.

The most disturbing thing about this incident is the media considers it news.
Well, the definition of news is what people are interested in. There are 13 pages on this stupid shite. So it looks like “the media” was right. You commented on it three pages in. Maybe you’re more disturbed with yourself than the media?

Both parties are stupid.

Again, as has been explained several times already, this is false.

slackster
the process has already started in fast food
you guessed it. the ordering app
you will see it soon at larger sit down chains. the job of the servers will be reduced to confirming actual order to app order, drink fills, and clearing tables

Agree on both points

Maybe in some corporate chains. Maybe.
But the industry as a whole values the intangibles of the service experience wayyyy too much to ever sign off on that exclusively.
