Big topic recently, and obviously one that isn't easily solved or explained away. I listened to parts of the president's speech on it and he painted a picture that it was a MUCH larger issue for minorities. Not really sure how it's relevant to the topic, or even true relatively...so:

Strangely enough, wage inequality between sexes is much less of an issue for blacks than any other demographic. Seems odd to bring ethnicity into this issue when the biggest relative gap is for white women, compared to their male counterparts. Anyway, I thought the chart was interesting because it broke the gap down by education.

I expected it to be less of an issue based on education because in general women do well in college. Vet schools, PT schools...you name it, professional schools in medicine have more women than men, at least in my experience. Not sure how to process all of the income earning folks in these categories (women getting advanced degrees in teaching disciplines that don't pay relatively as well as what most men might pursue as an example), but it seems like something that could absolutely be a non-issue.

There were pretty much only white guys in the more rigorous classes I took at LSU, and outside of prerequisites it's totally open to everyone. Give the effort you want, choose your own path...that's America. If you want to slave away like a fool to earn money...do it. White guys are suckers for it, doesn't mean it's an exclusive endeavor. Obviously Asian men are suckers for it too.

The issue that the fairer sex is paid less for the same job is upsetting, but not something I accept as reality. White women with the same education level as white men get paid less as a group...yea OK, I buy that. Seems like it's not something terribly difficult to explain away...what jobs do they pursue? I'd bet the lower quality of life, higher paying jobs are predominantly pursued by men. We're idiots.

Same for every education level, we're the suckers not the blessed.

My longest post ever.

If I own a company, I would hire women to save money. Too bad my I have a plumbing company. Same goes with Construction company, or auto repair shop, or grass cutting business.

who wants to pay some person that has raging hormones, and if she isnt bleeding she is taking 12 weeks baby leave, only to return and having to have a machine suck on her tits every two hours?

Of course they are different jobs. They lump in all of women's jobs versus men's jobs. Men's jobs tend to be more technical while women's leans more social services.

Why would they want the same amount a guy gets? They certainly don't need as much.

Not to mention Men's jobs are much riskier. I believe men make up like 98% of job related deaths. So, yea they can take their wage inequality and shove it.

yep, an elementary school teacher with a MA isn't going to pull down what a CivE with a bachelors does for example, plus factor in the family/maternity leave that was passed in the Clinton era, etc., less income for guaranteed leave, actually hurts the employer

Holy cow. Look at facebook's benefits.

Paid paternity leave: 17 weeks

Other perks: New parents receive $4,000 to spend on their children, subsidized day care, the option to work from home, and $20,000 worth of family planning benefits (which covers egg freezing, sperm retrieval procedures, and fees to use a surrogacy agency).

This encourages more babies and less hours at the office.

I feel like that chart is intentionally misleading to prove their point. Using this as a denominator I could also use this chart to call women less ambitious, less valuable employees, or don't pursue higher paying trades or degrees. I don't think any of those things but without more detail you can't say there is wage inequality.
