It is a great strategy. If you close the plant and to through the time-consuming appellate process, there are few scenarios where the NLRB can justify a reopening of the plant.

Yep. It takes time and money to fight the NLRB and most business don’t want to pay the crazy amounts it takes (even if the business wins). And the employees can’t just sit around waiting for 5 or 6 years while it works its way through all the appeals, especially a shop that is just a brand new union.

They’re coming after my place of employment next month. Been there over 28 years and have been able to fight them off. Probably will be voted in this time. Too much diversity and inclusion has been hired by the very liberal German CEO.

Chattanooga is a LIBERAL cesspool. Crazy that it’s in East TN but I was surprised by the amount of blue hair Antifa types rolling around there.

Every inner city is Liberal. Hamilton County which it is in is still very conservative. It’s a great place to live. Where the VW plant specifically is, is in a very conservative area. There is a Southern Adventist town and university right next door.

It would hurt, but wouldn’t destroy our economy. We have a pretty diverse setup here and could draw in other companies if the UAW tanks VW. Honestly, I would like to see a housing market dip from that in this area tbh.

No one wants to discuss it, but dealing with union elections is a lot like working the national elections: the black vote is likely to be pro-union. Most of the union organizers who make the initial contact are black.

If the South starts voting unions into Southern auto plants (primarily the foreign owned ones), it will likely end the construction of auto plants in the South.

But, no one sees the long-term.

Sort of like an encapsulated tumor. Sooner or later, it escapes and destroys the rest.

They’re Volkswagen. They should just close the plant and go back to building them in Germany. If I buy a German car, I want it to be truly German made anyway.

Even if they move to Mexico, the price of VWs won't come down.

Right. If you’re going to lose the labor cost advantage, then why build them here at all?

Ads for union at Mercedes near Tuscaloosa are all over YouTube right now. I’m sure Honda in Lincoln will probably be next.

When McDermott workers voted in the Union, the company lasted about 3 more years then they ceased operations in Amelia and moved to Mexico.

The pictures in the linked article don't do justice to the dancing and hollering that were going on in that studio. If you think they have eaten well as non-union workers, just imagine with the increased wages they expect to be gifted.

Right strange group.

VW Wanted a collective bargaining agreement at their Tennessee plant initially. Their employees voted for a collective bargaining agreement. The Tennessee legislature got involved and put an end to the company and their employees agreeing to a CBA because the Tennessee GOP did not want the plant to have a CBA regardless of what the company wanted or the companies employees wanted. VW is accustomed to dealing with a representative of their employees....not individual employees. They prefer a CBA...its how they do business. Why anyone other than VW and VW employees think they know what's best for VW and VW employees is beyond me but the Tennessee GOP certainly thought they knew what was best.

VW has 122 plants in 32 countries including China, Mexico and Ghana. 121 of those plants have a collective bargaining agreement with VW because that is VW's preferred business model. The outlier is their Tennessee assembly plant where local politicians have adamantly opposed a collective bargaining agreement despite VW and VW employees expressing their desire to have said agreement.

All union workers should be out on their asses.

They cost the company way too much money and cost us consumers in overpaying for a product.

Instead of parroting the same old tired right winged rhetoric it may be valuable to understand VW's management team take on unions...they prefer a union workforce over a non-union one because they can negotiate with a small group representing the entire group. They have 122 plants worldwide in places like China, Ghana and Mexico...all but one has a CBA with the employees, the plant in Tennessee. VW Management was ASTONISHED the first time the vote was not in favor of a union and actually planned to move the line to a plant with a CBA so they would not have to negotiate with thousands of people individually....VW is in a FAR better position to manage their business than Tennessee politicians or anyone without a vested financial interest in managing VWs business practices. They prefer a CBA with their employees.

These idiots don’t comprehend the mobility of capital in modern society. It’s fairly painless for a manufacturer to move operations to another country over the course of a few years - especially when converting to a new product version or model.

The “find out” part for a worker usually takes a couple years so they wake up one day and just wonder why they are back flipping burgers for $15/hour with no benefits instead of flipping car parts for $35 + benefits.

Again, VW prefers CBAs with their employees. They have 122 plants worldwide. Tennessee was the only one without a CBA. It is VWs preference....they WANT a CBA....VW Management WANTS a CBA. Why anyone without a vested interest cares what VW wants is interesting...

I would love to see VW announce the plant is closing and moving to Texas or Florida.

It won't happen but that would be poetic justice. And it would send a message to all other U.S. auto plants.

If VW were to open or build a plant in Texas or Florida VW would initiated the NLRB vote because VW PREFERS having a CBA in place with their workers over operating without a CBA...it is how they PREFER to do business....they do not care what nation or state they are in, they prefer a CBA.

The current NRLB would find that to be an unfair labor practice.

If it is their only plant, they could close the plant and move the work to Mexico - even if it is motivated by anti-union animus.

It is an odd rule that recognizes the right of a company to shut down (or, if it is multinational, to not do business in the U.S.). If you have two plants, you can't close on because it voted to unionize. But you could close both plants.

VW has plants in Mexico. They have a CBA with the employees of those plants because VW prefers having a CBA with its employees over not having one...it is how they do business.

Chattanooga is VW’s only plant in the US.

And the only one of 122 VW plants worldwide currently being operated without a CBA with the employees because VW prefers having a CBA with its employees...it is how they do business worldwide. VW was SHOCKED after the first vote failed in Tennessee because they preferred dealing with the UAW....they have said as much many times about their facility in Tennessee...THEY, VW Management, wanted a UAW contract in place...it is their preferred method of doing business, negotiating with a small number of people instead of thousands of individuals AND being able to tell the world that their employers are well compensated and have good benefits...I know the latter is simply sickening to far too many people but VW prefers being known as an employer that pays its production costs instead of low balling its workers. If you study the history of VW there is an obvious reason for their preference in this area....
