I'll bite too. Here's what I think I'm getting from that.

Implied syllogism:
If magic were "real" it would "work".
It doesn't really or actually "work".
It "works" psychotherapeutically.
Consequently, magic is not "real".

Subconscious(?) syllogism:
Magic isn't real.
Because it isn't real, when it appears to "work", it does so psychotherapeutically, not actually. Therefore, magic isn't real.

If he were alive, I wonder if Castenada would see it this way?

It's interesting that investigators (I use that term broadly) like all the "ghost" hunters and similar paranormal seekers all enter with the presupposition that ghosts, demons, and the paranormal are real.

It seems also that many academics approach the unusual, paranormal, miraculous, and mysterious with similar presuppositions. They enter with the mindset that none of those things are "real".

Not a criticism at all, just an observation and a question.
