Love these watch threads. I buy Citizen and Seiko chronograph style watches from pawn shops myself. Wish I had a family heirloom like that. Awesome watch PLUS the family provenance. Resale value means nothing compared to sentimental value. PLEASE follow up to this thread or make another after you get it serviced and polished.

errata: The movement in that watch is technically a Venus 175 as others have mentioned I tend to call the whole lineage of the 75 a 75 (including the Chinese variations) until I know enough about the movement to nail down the specific iteration. The 75 was upgraded to the 175 pre-war (maybe '41).

Here's the Patek. As you can see I also have the bonafides for it. First image is tough but it says 18k.

Looks like a 2501. A so-called Disco Volante. But that “Swiss” signature and grave accent look… a little funky. Could just be the magnification would like to see better pictures.

PP 2501 probably early 50s. It is in a Wenger "Disco Volante" case which houses a Caliber 10-200. I have never seen one with a silver dial before which may or may not speak to the rarity.
Disco Volante is used by some exclusively for the 2552 reference but many also consider the 2501 case to be a DV. Much like the term Calatrava prior to Patek actually using it there is nor formal definition. This watch would be considered a Calatrava by many and not at all by others.

I, too, have never seen one in this configuration.

Did a little research.
quote:
Your Patek Philippe should say SWISS on the dial, or other variants such as MADE IN SWITZERLAND or SWISS MADE depending on the era and market destination.

The early 50s estimation seems accurate. He cashed in a life insurance policy in the early 50s purchase it. The man loved watches. We have quite the little collection of his including a very pretty dress Rolex from back in the day.

I’m realizing the size was inflated because of magnification. Lovely watch under any circumstance. I have a soft spot for, and collect, these old Pateks.

Yeah. The value to us is in sentiment as he cherished his watches.

I'd be careful about the restoration. If you send it to the wrong place, they will polish the gold to make it look like new. You may want a "sympathetic" restoration with minimal polishing. You gramps has used that watch and I for one wouldn't want it to look like a new one.

He should be very very very specific about what he wants out of a servicing. I believe he knows how to set expectations on what he wants. He was smart enough to solicit input here which is a good step

Obtuse do you have an objection to meeting one day to look at your collection? I think I've established myself as a true WIS.

Joke’s on you.
My man wears a Casio calculator watch and rides a modern Mongoose walmart bicycle. Don’t let his schtick fool you.

Check out Wristwatch Revival. I'll bet if you send him a story about what it meant to your grandfather (and you) he'll repair and service it as part of his YouTube channel.

I was going to say the same thing he makes the best watch videos on YouTube

My grandfather also rocked a twist-o-flex on his Omega.
I wonder if that has something to do with how well it would secure the watch to the wrist while also not cutting off the circulation if it was too tight?
I have a couple watches with bands that I wish had closer spaced notches; seems it's either too loose or too tight.
