My fiancè is Vietnamese. Went to Vietnam and Thailand with her and loved it.
If you're a good looking white dude you can be an absolute king over there.
As other have said, went to some interesting places in Bangkok. We met an expat and he brought us to the streets where no phones are allowed, as you can imagine what that's like. Tons of old white guys living and loving life.

What kind of jobs could a single man get if I just moved there?
Is it pretty much a requirement to have a nice nest egg before making the move?
Pretty much.. it’s *possible* to find employment there with a US company, but highly unlikely.. two major impediments are that most jobs go to Asian locals (which is understandable ) and even of you could get one of those jobs, the average salary is like $10 US dollars per day so there is no way most foreigners could make ends meet… Most of the western expatriates I’ve met in my travels fall into a few categories:
1) older (50s,60s,70s, 80s) guys who have a pension or SS check they live on - you wont ‘live like a king’ on $1700 usd per month, or even $2200 usd per mo- but you will live very well, WAY better than living in a trailer park or nursing home in the US
2) younger (40s, early 50s)- guys who retired early from military or police
3) “Digital Nomads”- generally younger (20s, 30s ) guys who make a living online as web developers or the like.. but a lot of them are just trust fund kids
4) people like myself (30s, 40s, 50s)- who start businesses they can run online and/or just invested well and have the nest egg you mentioned to make it work.. i know one guy who has worked in SE Asia for like 15 years for the US govt and gets an American salary, but that it exceedingly rare .

What’s the capitol of Thailand?

I’m pretty sure any American left would have been killed lol. They did not like us at all back then. They saw us as people who came in, and destroyed their homes, because we did. So I doubt there were any Vietnam Vets who would have voluntarily decided to stay after the war ended.
Don't know why you got so many down votes for your post, because you are basically correct. After we left Vietnam, the communist took control and soon went to war with Cambodia, ruled by Pol Pot's Kmar Rouge, who still had a presence in parts of Vietnam. There were kidnappings, assassinations and forced labor camps. It would be pretty hard to survive all of this as a US serviceman. You could probably survive in Thailand or Laos, maybe. Hell, the reason there was so much Vietnamese migration to Louisiana and Texas in the early 70s was due to the fear of reprisals from the North Vietnamese at the end of the war. This was for the South Vietnamese who had the means to escape. The rest were killed or interned.

Not at the pussy show bruh. Fully nude covered in bath bubbles. She was fine as frogs hair. It's not advertised. Locals took me to it.

It's also so funny how they think they're a catch and "you're dating down" if you marry a foreigner.
Lol. Yes, curious isn’t it? I got that even when I married an Asian immigrant 30 years ago. The whole thing is set up to convince you to accept the unacceptable. Dont look at that impossibly sexy Latina or that calm and demure Thai girl, you loser- look at this angry white lady surrounded by the team of psychiatrists with the NPR tote bag and “ my body my choice “ bumper sticker on her car. She’s the one for you. frick that. It’s an inferior product being sold at a premium.
As I write this I’m staying in an attached apartment in Queen Anne owned by a high level Google executive. She’s worth many millions. And I’d 100% prefer an agreeable Thai peasant who wants me to buy her parents a water buffalo every three years than deal with this boner- killing Boss Babe shite

My favorite are the people who are convinced that anyone who goes to SE Asia is a “sexpat”.. personally speaking, I’ve never paid for pussy, or for anything else ‘dating’-related… now, I don’t judge, and im not even saying i wont pay for it when i get older- just that I’ve never paid cash to a woman for any sort of dating up to this point.. now to be clear, we all ‘pay for it’ in some way, just like in America- by buying her dinner, or listening to her bitchin or acting like we care about whatever she’s saying.. and again i don’t judge since many guys who go to SE Asia for a couple weeks vacation want a ‘sure thing’, so they’ll pay for a high end escort or a bargirl or a massage parlor happy ending or whatever, no judgement here.. but when I go there , i go for big chunks of time, longest time I’ve ever spent there was 18 months- so i have time to meet normal, educated, classy women - for the most part .. dont pay attention to the ill-informed people, who think everyone who goes to SE Asia are into illegal, underage things.. simply not true, every woman I’ve been involved with has been legal, consensual and ADULT.. im sure there are a few guys who dont follow that and they give everyone else a bad name but hey, you can even find sex trafficking in America.. End of the day, ignorant people are gonna have ignorant opinions, full stop .

Yeah, it’s a fem centric narrative built by angry white ladies who hate that American men have other options. “ You must be paying for it it -ewww sounds transactional” - completely oblivious to the fact that their husband has been paying the freight for decades. Completely oblivious to the fact that a KIND man has a value in Asia that he would be gutted for in The West.
See that’s the thing, men are rewarded for the old virtues over there. A 61 retired Irish mailman with a 6k a month pension doesn’t have to “ pay” for hookers and bad girls, women 25 years younger will flock to him because Thai men won’t settle down because sex is readily available. The western expat guy just has to exhibit good character annd be down with monogamy and he can have whatever GF he wants. “ You take care me I take care you”. As opposed to what we have here “ You take care of me and I’ll be a total pain in your arse who eventually drives you insane and take half your stuff”.

In OP:
Sure, Jim Thompson traveled to Thailand as US military to fight the Japanese, but the war ended as he arrived in Bangkok. He liked it, and stayed for a few decades (as a spy for the first few years, at least). He opened up a silk business that is still doing very well. His house in Bangkok is well worth a visit for the old style Thai stilt houses he moved there (very few remain) and there are some pretty cool artifacts. He vanished while hiking in Malaysia in the 1960's. One of the artifacts in his house:
It's an outline of Laos and the UAS did the bombing. The interesting thing is that the date the bombing ended, and shown on the decoration, was 1973. Thompson had been dead for a while, so it was not his. In fact he had a falling out with the OSS and was out of favor in Washington. It's quite possible we had him killed since his sympathies were with the Laotians.
Jim Thompson story.
I had a chance to spend a month in Thailand in February and loved it. The people have to be the nicest and friendliest on the planet. And the food is awesome. An engineer I worked with married a Thai woman and spends several months a year there. He loves it too.
A friend moved to the Phillipines on retirement with plans to spend a few years seeing asia. He's already dating a local who must be 20-30 years younger. He's loving it.

Yep, the Philippines is like Thailand on steroids .. i had a friend in the Philippines, an 80 year old guy who had a 25 yr old live in girlfriend… and she was hot.. sort of a Bill Belichick situation.. it was hilarious, we’d be having coffee and he’d get a text from his young GF that she was horny, so he’d pop a Viagra and get ready to head back home .. god love him .
The thing is, you absolutely cannot, and should not , bring your Western mindset to that part of the world.. most people in America would consider that type of relationship “creepy”, whereas it’s perfectly normal and accepted in Asia if, again, as long as everyone is legal, consensual and adult .

In business over there, it helps to have a Westerner, preferably White American in the room.
They place White men, particularly tall white Americans on a pedestal.

When in the Army I met a guy in the stockade who had gone AWOL in Vietnam and hung out with his mama-san. He'd been tried, convicted and returned to the States for dishonorable discharge. His plan as explained to me was to collect the discharge and head back Vietnam and his sweetie.
Don't know what happened to him... old man now if alive.

I lived in Bangkok on Sathorn Road for a while. No complaints except it took three laundry ladies before I found one that would chill out on the strong smelling detergent. I could smell a shirt from across the house.

Agreed, I've been around a bit and never want to be one of the ugly American tourists I run into too often (Nothing is worse than the Chinese, though). I do intend to visit him in the spring, though not really with any intention of finding a girlfriend. Life is more enjoyable to me without all the drama. I mostly want to see more of Asia, we'll likely go see somewhere else like Vietnam which is high on my list.

I’d like to visit Da Nang, I haven’t been to Vietnam yet.. but weirdly, I’ve talked to multiple people who said that Da Nang has a major problem with rats.. like, they said they’d see more rats in one day in Da Nang than in an entire month in Bangkok.. just something to consider .
