Say what you will but the beauty of the slide rule is it teaches you the math to use it. Plugging numbers into a calculator is good and all but kids today don't seem to understand the underlying math anymore.
To not be able to use a rotary phone is not to be unexpected but to not recognize it is unexpected. Just two generations above mine my family did not have indoor plumbing (too be fair, nobody else did at the time either) but I know what an outhouse is and how to use it. The issue made is the narrow band of history of the younger generation will come back to haunt them for not learning earlier history then repeating it.

You may not use morse code often it is a good thing to know if you are stranded where their is no power for electronic communication.
The telegraph may be a thing of the past it had one unexpected benefit in the future. It was a hard copy of the milestone events in peoples lives such as birth, marriages, and deaths. I have intergeneration reminders in old family photo albums.
Trains took longer to reach destinations so conversations and communication expanded as people were traveling across the country. Nothing like the old dining cars with real food cooked fresh and bartenders that knew how to make a drink.

During the operation of the Space Shuttle using Morse code was their final backup if all other communication modes were lost. If they were able to only turn a transmitter on and off they could still communicate back to earth. They had a chart of the code, a few of the astronauts actually became proficient in it.

I have taught at several universities, you don't have to go through a thousand students to find 3 students that don't know who the vice president is, probably as few as 50 would yield 3 or 4. Do you think expecting students to graduate from high school with the most basic understanding of how the government of their country functions is asking too much when a woman was just elected to congress that could not name the three branches of the federal government?

Centuries ago, the populace was uneducated and could not sign their own name and had to make an "X" as their mark. Cursive allowed us not only to make our mark but to do it in such a unique way that forgery became harder to do. centuries from now we will be back to making "X" as our mark, just doing it with pixels instead of pens and we will not be a better society for it.

Thanks, up until the early 70's I remember when you could load your car on the train, have a nice ride to sunny south Florida and actually enjoy it. Then have your car unloaded so you did not need to rent a car when you got there.
Somehow this got eliminated in the name of progress?
Now you go to the airport (fee for taxi)
Wait 2 hours so TSA can check you in and limited to airport food
Board a plane with sardine sized travel accommodations and luggage limits
Switch planes in some place like ATL for 2 to 6 hours of layover
Pick up a rental car when you arrive with added 50 bucks for airport fees
Granted it took 2 days by train but it was slow and luxurious. Now it takes a day by plane but most of that is wasted waiting and being herded like cattle. Does not sound like progress to me.
If you were wealthy, you had your own private car to travel on and could "park" near events sorta like the Cockaboose's at SC.
