They make relatively cheap chew toys/treats that help to keep their teeth clean. And they sell meat flavored dog toothpaste and little brushes. I brushed my dogs teeth a few times a month, and they got the treats in between. I didn't think it was that important, but after about a month or so of cleaning them myself, they weren't that dirty the next time I brushed them. I don't see the big deal. Just do it yourself.

There's a reason why even pet insurance covers this.

This board has many dumb people.

Amazes me that people can't understand that dental health is important for dogs. I figure they are just too dumb, have a disgusting mouth themselves, or both.
It's the vets job to advise the best treatment plan and care for your pet. It's up to both of you to decide what will actually be done.

Do it. Don't be shocked if some are pulled.

An ethical veterinarian should be the advocate for the dog's best interests. If you feel like they're doing stuff just to increase the revenue then find someone you trust and listen to them. Same thing for your physician, mechanic, dentist, etc.

I'v had my dog's teeth cleaned three times. The last time they found three teeth that needed to be pulled. It's expensive because they have to put the dog under to do the procedure, even just cleaning. My dog is 13 years old and I don't want him to suffer losing all his teeth and not being able to eat.

I'd just use greenies if my dog was having dental issues. I just give her chew toys or a rawhide, and my bitch has perfect teeth.

Milk bones and dental chews.
Milk bones actually taste pretty good.

And this is where I'm in a battle with our current vet. I dropped my lab off for dental 2 weeks ago. The blood test they did before had a very minor spike in a liver enzyme level (I'm talking 2% above normal). Vet didn't do the dental, sent me home with $125 in prescriptions. Go try again this week, enzyme level is 1% above normal. Vet still doesn't "feel comfortable" putting my dog under for the dental.
So a $250-$300 dental procedure has run me over $500 in labwork and medicine to tell me my dog is perfectly healthy and can proceed with the $300 dental. Needless to say I'm pissed.

I haven't ever even heard of a dog getting his teeth cleaned. Waste of money.

Just had one of dogs at the vet for vaccination. Told me dogs teeth needed cleaning and then proceeded to show the price chart. Could be in range of $500 to $900 depending on how bad things were. They are bat shite crazy.

That does seem kinda wacked.
My dogs are close to 15 so I get theirs cleaned annually.
I think the whole deal w/ blood work, is around $250.

Yeah. I've spoken with two other vets that I know and trust but work outside of the area. Both agreed the enzyme level needed to be at least 25% above before any cause for concern and 100% above normal before holding off on the dental.
While I appreciate our vet's concern and diligence, it appears to be overkill and teetering on the edge of me paying for unnecessary meds and tests.

100%
With the understanding that good medicine costs real money. All that equipment, medication, etc aren't cheap so you're not getting things at cost. Vet that is cheap and doesn't recommend anything isn't any better for you and your pet

I have not personally held off of procedures bc of a liver enzyme elevations that mild.
Well that settles it for me. But what if I check the dog's paws/knuckles and they look roughed up? should they be muzzled right away? Do they need dental care ?

People really need to get with regular check ups, dental cleaning, etc for the pets. Besides that they are family member and should be treated as such, not taking care of them properly leads to very expensive bills in the future or prematurely putting them down. Get on an inexpensive pet insurance program and take care of the pet you made the commitment to take care of.
