Worst decision you can make is to put a pool in. Take it from experience

Nah, we’ll never not have a pool. Love it. Take it from experience.

We have a large pool, either 30 or 32,000 gal. If I had to redo I'd get a much smaller one. Kids have just as much fun. We live in clay soil, I'd also get a sump pump under the pool, that would have saved me a lot on liner replacements. (under or next to idk). I have 125 trees in my yard and every one of them have the words, "pool or bust" grown into the backside of the leaf. I mulch leaves every 2-3 days in the fall. I don't know about pool covers, if there is a way to remove the leaves easily after you get a ton of leaves on top of it......idk. Had one pool cover that I ended up dumping the entire load into the pool trying to remove.....

Former pool under 100ft trees owner here and your leaf assessment is spot on

I hear they add no value to a house. So it is a sunk cost.

Get a betta bot skimmer. It runs on solar and you pretty much don’t have to clean skimmer baskets with it

Custom LED lighting with color choices, light show theme.

Arcing pool surface jets. Get multiple nozzles. The sounds of the splashing water just makes the backyard feel classy and serene.

I have bubblers but rarely turn them on.

Decking around the pool to put tables and chairs on, if you can afford it. Don't just have a pool with coping tile on the edge and grass lawn all around, if possible.

Also its outrageously expensive but synthetic turf in the backyard is the best. Little to no mosquitos, can walk around the yard with socks or bare feet and not get muddy, and I Love that weed eaters and lawn mowers have no reason to go back there.

4. Salt water in the south.

Great post! A lot of smart installation instructions.

I had a pool put in two and a half years ago, and I was talked out of saltwater by both the installer and my friend who sells pools in Texas (We’re in the NOLA area).

We installed a system which uses some sort of UV(?) light to kill bacteria, plus a small amount of chlorine in the pool. It has been wonderful! I don’t notice the chlorine, because the level is so low.

I would definitely figure out drainage issues with the new patio. That includes your current drainage from the roof and new pool deck surface. Make sure you have a place for water to go. A lot of times drainage is an after-thought.

7 pages and the first mention of this.......put this high up on your list. Nothing worse than having a beautiful pool that creates a massive PITA when it rains.

Since they will be tearing up your yard, have roof and decking drain into a line that brings it to an area where your yard easily drains.....connect your backwash to it as well. Enjoy
