If I won't get $20, what would I get, and why would I want to keep them? Should I be waiting for the Hunt brothers to rise from the dead and try to corner the silver market again?

You may still have a rare coin even though it may be circulated. You should purchase a current "The official Red Book" Guide for USA coins, R.S. Yeoman. Go home spend some time with the coins and the book. When you feel like you're ready visit a good dealer. I use Southland Coins in Lake Charles. Get some offers, check the book. Don't be in a hurry.

My mother has a bunch of old silver dollar coins
Go to Hans Leutkemeier Silversmith in Metairie. They will assess them and give you a very fair price. I found a bunch of sterling silver coins when I cleaned out my deceased uncle's office. They really know their stuff.
ETA: He loves old stuff and he and his wife are very gracious and a pleasure to do business with.

Thanks, Glassman.
I understand that someone buying coins for resale has to make a reasonable margin to remain in business. My concern is that there may be (are...) shyster bastards out there. I'm happy to have a referral to a reputable local dealer. Thanks again. I appreciate the help.

Have you checked completed listings on eBay?

No problem. Of course they will melt it down and make some beautiful stuff with it. Take some of the money and buy something for your SO. They have some gorgeous things there.
Hans and his wife are German and I love their accents..

Try State Rep Paul Hollis in the ST Tammany area. He has some sort of coin certification and possible a coin shop.

Normal circulated silver coins will bring between $15/$20 on the dollar. Look for Carson City mint marks. Those coins will bring a premium.

PCGS.com has an easy to follow photo grade guide for all US coins

Thanks for the help. The OT was way more helpful than the Money Board!

I don't know anything about them other than that they have been in business for 30+ years and have a shitload of coins but there is that place on Royal Street.
James H. Cohen and Sons.

Yeah, that place on Royal has a lot of cool stuff besides coins. Old maps and weaponry. Neat place to visit.

Spot price is about $16. He would get $20.
Assuming he sold them for their 90% silver, yes. But I'm sure he had some gems in the bunch he's not aware of, they always do.

not from a store he wouldn't
he'd have to sell to a collector
stores buy low, sell high, or they're out of business.
and numismatics are poor investments....ok for a hobby, but invest money elsewhere
