Was that thing effective at all? Looks like a cheap copy of a Stug III.
Well, it had both strengths and weaknesses. It’s main gun, the D5-S 85 mm, was effective against German armor. But, as was the case with all Soviet armored vehicles, the main gun’s effectiveness was hampered by the poor quality of Soviet tank sight optics wick limited the effective range of the gun. It also lacked any defensive machine guns which meant it was particularly vulnerable to infantry equipped with shoulder-fired anti-tank weapons like the Panzerfaust or Panzerschreck. It did have good cross county capability and a reliable engine.

But educate me, how is it not a tank?
It is a tank destroyer.

Hey Darth, love these threads as well. But educate me, how is it not a tank? It’s armored, on tracks, has big gun? Also, do you do planes, I don’t remembe?. I’m talking WWII planes
Thanks. Basically it isn’t a tank because it lacks the heavy armor and a turret like a tank. This vehicle is based on the T34/85 tank. Basically the reason the Soviets and Germans built “assault guns” was they were cheaper to make than tanks and allows they formations to bolster their tank killing capability on the defensive.

Maybe an odd question but what is the biggest model you’ve done? Just in terms of sheer size…
I use to have a rather large 1:48 scale PBY Catalina. It looked like this…

Sadly it was a victim of some friends toddler who they should have been watching closer.

The Soviets built simple tanks but well designed, they just built zillions of them.

It's based on a T34 chassis, so it's size is going to be comparable to a Sherman.
Look into the IS series of tanks and tank destroyers if you want the heavyweights. If you really wanna run wild, check out the T35.

Very cool as always. How long does one of these guys take you? Jealous for your kid(s) that they will get these one day.
Depends on how much free time I have. Usually about three weeks or so is my average I think. Now that football season is here though I’ll slow down because my Saturday’s will be spent watching football. Right now I have this kit underway…

There is a lot to this kit; it’s pretty detailed. I’m about 75% through with the hull assembly. If I had to guess it will probably be another two, maybe three weeks before it’s ready.

No. In fact the SU-85 carried the same gun as the T-34/85, which replaced the original T-34. If you look closely at the SU-85 you’ll see it’s really a assault gun version of the T-34/85. Same chassis, same gun, same engine, just configured as an assault gun instead of a tank.

Nice work Darth, thanks for sharing.
I’ve been immersed on the Eastern Front for the past couple of weeks.
The Soviets built a imperial frick ton of artillery pieces and tanks in addition to what they got from us (U.S. and the U.K.).

I want to get back into models. When I was younger I had dozens of planes hanging in my room. But my friends have me shite and I threw them all away. I used to really like making models. I would take my time and preprint before assembly them weather them.
I did a few cars. But I liked to do ww2 planes dog fighting.

You should do it. It’s a great hobby.

You'd be amazed at how the hobby has grown since those times. Just go to micromark.com and look at all the tools and supplies they make now. You'd be like a kid again, but with your own money to blow.

My dad used to put together models. He mostly did planes and ships. Its tedious as hell.

Darth,
You need to do a CH-53E Super Stallion decked out with HMH-465 markings. For no particular reason...

Academy makes this 1/48 scale…

Here’s the decal set that comes in the kit.

Can you identify the unit markings?
