The Tiger I (German: ['ti?g?] ?) was a German heavy tank of World War II that began operational duty in 1942 in Africa and in the Soviet Union, usually in independent heavy tank battalions. It gave the German Army its first armoured fighting vehicle that mounted the 8.8 cm (3.5 in) KwK 36 gun (derived from the 8.8 cm Flak 36, the famous "eighty-eight" feared by Allied troops). 1,347 were built between August 1942 and August 1944.[12] After August 1944, production of the Tiger I was phased out in favour of the Tiger II.

Your attention to detail is amazing. Great work as always. Are the cylinders on the back extra fuel?

Fantastic job, but watch out for those T-34s.

Thanks. Those are actually the air filters. This design was only used on the early Tigers.

This Tiger ate T-34s for breakfast. When the early Tiger I was introduced in 1942, the T-34 still had the 76mm gun. The Soviets may as well have been throwing water balloons at Tigers at that point. It would not be until mid to late 1943 when the up-gunned T34/85 arrived at the front in sufficient numbers to allow Soviet tankers to have a prayer against Tigers.

Ok. I got mixed up. I remember that their superiority in numbers eventually overwhelmed the Nazis later in the war coupled with the Soviets standardization of tanks and trucks compared to the Nazis. It made fixing and maintaining tanks much easier for the Soviets.

No problem. Even after the introduction of the T-34/85, in 1 on 1 contest, the Tiger would absolutely slaughter Soviet tanks; with some Tiger battalions having kill ratios around 15 to 1. I saw a stat once that something close to 75% of Soviet solders who were assigned to tanks (they didn’t get to choose) became casualties during the war, most of them being KIA.

Now you have me breaking this out to play. Thanks!

I recently finished the book Barbarossa by Alan Clark. In it Kleist had high expectations for a Panther variation that would soon come out, but it was a disaster. The Panther lacked machine guns to keep Soviet infantry away so the Panthers were easily slaughtered by Soviet infantry with flamethrowers sprayed into the vent port.

Geez, I think I still have that on my iPad somewhere.

I believe you’re thinking about the Panzerjäger Tiger (P) “Ferdinand”.

It was a casemate style tank destroyer based on the Porsch version of the Tiger that was rejected but the Germans took the hulls already built and used them to create Ferdinand. It was used during Operation Zitadelle (the Battle of Kursk) in summer 1943. Though it proved very capable of killing Soviet tanks, even at great distance, it proved highly vulnerable to Soviet infantry due to having no defensive armaments. Its battlefield debut proved to be a disaster. Later on it was fitted with a bow MG though which helped.

Zelensky could fit his little arse in there but his ego probably couldn’t.

Michael Whitman. He was a legit celebrity in wartime Germany. Of course, being in the Waffen SS, the Nazi Party made sure to highlight his successes. However, the greatest German tank ace of the war was a guy who didn’t fit the Nazi mold…
They didn’t exactly highlight him all that much.

Knispel was kind of the Sergeant Oddball of the Pnazerwaffe.
