It was only used early in the war, it was a gas detection patch..they were afraid of the Germans using gas early in World War II that if the aircraft flew through gas, the patch would turn color and alert the ground crew that the aircraft needed decontamination.. also seen on early Spitfires.

Well, I’ll be damned. Never would have guessed it. I’ve noticed it before but never knew that’s what it was for.

Remarkable work as usual. I can see it chasing Messerschmitts over England. Damn those downvoters!

The Fokker was in a Messerschmitt.

One of the interesting things about the Hawker is that it was made of wooden ribs and stretched canvas. Against German fighters armed with 20 to 37mm cannons, the shells would often pass right through without detonating.

I think most everything behind the pilot was wooden ribs and canvas while the front half of the fuselage and the wings were metal. You can see it pretty well in this picture.

No doubt, but it still makes a smaller target.

Flew the Hawker in MS Combat Flight Simulator a couple of decades back. Our squad was off and on the quarterly champion. Each of us probably averaged flying about 40 hours a week and did so for a couple of years.

Still have a model of a Hawker up on my bookshelf, but it's nowhere near as good as yours.

While there are accounts of Hurricanes engaging Messerschmitts during the Battle of Britain, the primary role of the Hurricane was to intercept the bombers and allow the Spitfires to achieve air superiority over England.

Great work, Darth.

How about the one with the large hole blown through it. I'm certain none of the crew survived that.

Well, it’s kinda like what Bluerisge mentioned. The Spits got the glory of dogfighting the BF-109s and 110s that were escorting the HE-111s, DO-17s and JU-88s. But it was those bombers who were trying to bomb the UK into submission. And it was the Hurricanes that went after them. And, though they paid a heavy price, the Hurricanes did their job.

I watched a Documentary on The Battle Of Britain just the other day. I am almost 100% certain they said that the British policy on going after the mass swells of German Aircraft was; that the Hurricanes went after the Bombers and the Spitfires went after the German Fighters.

That’s correct. The Spitfire was far better suited to tackle the BF-109s and BF-110s than the Hurricane. So the Spitfires would peel off the Luftwaffe fighter escorts to clear the way for the Hurricanes to go after the bombers.

I do these threads for two reasons

1. There’s a lot of people who enjoy them and I enjoy sharing my hobby with them.

2. There’s others who hate these threads and I enjoy irritating them.

—-Yes, and another on the opposite side.

If a tank had lots of “meat” inside after a big hit, but otherwise was still operational, soldiers were sent inside to get out all the body parts, scrub it down and get it ready to roll again. Read “Patton’s Panthers” about the African-American 761st tank battalion.

The Hawkers could do a lot of damage with their 8 303's.
