knowing what I know now, I would have started out at at least 50% with what I have...even if you don't get money initially, anything you can get a 0% for right now sets you up for future payments as you've established a service connection...

some things to be aware of:

at 30% you start getting mileage to/from your VA appointments;

at 50% you move up the priority list and start getting free scrips;

at 70%, if you eventually have to go to a nursing home, you can go to one of the Veteran's homes for free;

if you can get to 100%, lots of states waive property taxes, free car tags, and all sorts of other little bits and pieces

Stay free at VA house for free up to a year. BIL had lots of benefits, unfortunately he passed last month from heart issues.

He had so many meds, it was unreal. All free. Nurses came to house to check his blood sugar weight and other issues twice a week. He had a LVad put in his heart at no charge. VA won’t do it but Oschner agreed to do it. VA paid for it.

You need to gather all of your medical records. Back them up electronically. Then schedule an appointment with the VA or a VA representative. DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR RECORDS WITHOUT KEEPING A COPY.

Start here.
VA benefits

Be prepared to be denied OVER and OVER. They will deny and ask for you to submit a form you already sent in. Get in touch with your congressman or representative and ask them to get involved. Once you do that, magically they will have all the forms they need.

AND, it retro'd back to the date you first applied.

In addition to what has already been posted, everything is about documentation (military and medical) and your examinations. Know 38 CFR Book C, Schedule for Rating Disabilities for each one of your claimed disabilities (in general you will be examined for each disability separately and then have a final, comprehensive examination known as a C&P or Compensation & Pension examination).

The documentation you provide and language/description you use in these examinations are critical. Do not exaggerate. Simply describe your worst day when you are meeting with the provider.

Also highly recommend that you research VA Claims Insider for each of your claimed disabilities. They will give you insights into how best to research and present your disability.

Best of luck to you. It is a lengthy process that I just successfully completed.

Look up the Veterans Service Officer for your county or area. I’d have at a minimum your DD214 and Medical records. They will help you navigate the process and are typically able to talk to people within the VA system that we peons aren’t able to talk to

Download and read the VA “schedule of rateimgs” it’s invaluable and let’s you know what conditions get you what percentage and how it’s evaluated. I left active duty and got 80percent initially but am now 100percent permanent and total. If you need any advice I can help.

Trying to get to the holy grail

Buddy of mine just retired from the Army in September.

He got his 100% rating last week.

Ole baw is getting $3,400 a month, tax free, for the rest of his life.

Living in Texas he doesn't have to pay property taxes now. That's going to save him an additional $700 a month.

Pretty sweet.

Honestly anyone can maximize their ratings,

It takes years, age and wear and tear on the body

You’re looking at it as in immediate need, it’s also about the future

I’ve known some junior enlisted soldiers who never deployed and army pt broke them so they get medically discharged and collected disability easily. Whereas others struggle for years and decades to get 100%
