Man my boykin and labkin would do the same if they came across a bunch of small furry animals. That's just what dogs do.

Should the owner pay for damages - yes. Should they be charged with a crime? Man that's a stretch.

Its a dog killing little birds. That's just going to happen with some breeds because of their instincts. That doesn't mean its a mean dog and has nothing to do with how they interact with humans.

Would you blame a cat for killing pet birds?

I know a couple that had a pen with a bunch of baby chicks for their child's birthday and their italian greyhound massacred them all They had to pay the company for new chicks, but that was all that happened.

Pretty sure my goldendoodle is the nicest dog I've ever been around and if he got into a cage with a baby duck, it'd be in his mouth in under 5 seconds

That's a little different

Damn. Huskies usually aren't like that. Was it like a toy poodle that was 5 lbs or something?

I mean, I don't like cats either, but a cat owner wouldn't be facing charges if it killed someone's pet duck. People would just say "oh that's a cat being a cat".

Dogs have instincts to go after small birds and rodents as well, as you stated about your dogs. I have a goldendoodle and he would likely kill a baby bird if he caught it (maybe unintentionally by just trying to squeeze it like a toy )
