It is their unit, someone has to make sure you are building that scaffold in a safe spot.

Yeah, sounds like poor management is not helping. There are fricktards that always push to the limits no matter what job.

I left this on the last page for you. Assume you haven't already built a life dependent on your current income

Actually there are those opportunities at the plants all the time, ops routinely move into day staff positions for periods of time. I prefer the shift life.
Not sure why you are hung up on lunch breaks or lack of, it comes with the territory.

Make it 60k and I would probably take it.

Personally I would do what I do now, but that's bc 99.9% of what is being fought for at the national level is already in place at my site (Norco).
What's being brought up are the conditions at other facilities and other companies.

Well then safety can't be that big of an issue if you're willing to risk your life over 20k a year.
I know what you guys do can be dangerous. But at the end of the day these things are always about money. The reason you guys get paid what you do is because there's an element of danger. Same thing with guys who work offshore.

no doubt from decades of contract negotiations.

I didn't say it would be no risk, what I'm saying is it can't be that bad if you wouldn't leave for 40k. If I thought my life was in imminent danger every hour I was at work I would be more than willing to leave

Who says it is in imminent danger every hour? The job is about risk management and eliminating fatigued employees reduces my the risk I have to take everyday.
Offering the opposite end of the spectrum for risk for a 1/4 of the pay is taking an analogy to the extreme. I am willing to accept certain risks as long as I can mitigate them myself. Fatigued employees is a risk that can't easily be mitigated.

At my site, hourly operators are not allowed to leave the site and there is no set lunch. You eat when you have time.

So, this a few pages late, but why don't these guys have money saved up to pay for COBRA? Are these guys living paycheck-to-paycheck that they can't afford COBRA to keep their insurance for a month?

I am in a completely unrelated field and I don't have a set lunch hour and sometimes miss lunch. It happens

Fwiw, the BP Texas City accident was due in large part to a frickup at a position that is largely salary across the industry, and he was cited as having fatigue from too many days in a row.
Dude?????
WhAt are you talking about??? The BP explosion was due to shite overflowing out the top of the blowdown stack because they were putting crap in vessels that were full. The relief valves had been bypassed and the alarm that was set to go off when the level got to a certain level had been going off for months due to it being faulty. When it went off a 3rd and fourth time, it was ignored again until shite started flowing out the top and a running truck served as the ignition source. Maybe it can be blamed on salary employees but it wasn't becuSe they worked too long

I'm sure some will, or find insurance elsewhere.
Can't fault people for being a little upset/worried for losing their income even if they knew it was a possibility.
