Sorry if I missed this on here, if so please delete.

Has anyone followed the USMC MH-53 that went down in CA? It was en route from the Vegas area to San Diego. Went down in a wooded area close to SD. They found the aircraft but no sign of the crew so far. Obviously hoping the crew is ok, but no one seems to know where they are, which seems crazy to me.

Does this make any sense at all? How can the crew disappear?

I was never an aircrew member, but it seems to me that especially in CONUS, you stay with the aircraft. Wouldn't that be the best way to be spotted and then recovered?

Short news clip on youtube.

They are probably still in Vegas hitting on showgirls and dropping 5 on red.

It seems weather has caused havoc with the search and rescue efforts.

All I can find is that the helicopter has been “located”. No word on if it was spotted by air, what condition it’s in, or if anyone on the ground has made it to the location.

I don’t think a rescue crew on the ground found it intact on the ground, but the crew was missing.

Pine Valley. It’s a national forest. I used to have to drive thru there on the way back to Pendleton. A lot of the roads are canyons and sketchy.

As for the aircraft, I believe they found it. I don’t know what caused the mishap but different scenarios could affect where the crew members are. I don’t know what the NATOPS says for their crew to do. More than likely they are severely injured or deceased. I also don’t think crews have made it to the site.

I was USMC aviation and lost Marines in training and combat mishaps. It’s not fun seeing a helicopter fit in a wooden box and losing your friends.

Surprise surprise.

Hope these Marines are found safe. Odd situation.

The Marine Corps gets the scraps when it comes to flying, they wear it as a badge of honor(as they should), but they're owed better.

They know where it crashed but based on the news clip I'm not sure they've actually made it to the site yet. Not good.

I thought they had found the crashed aircraft with no sign of the crew. This doesn't appear to be the case.

Are you sure you weren’t reading about the one from 2007?

If it is the one from yesterday could you post the article because I can’t seem to find one verifying the Marines were confirmed dead.

Marines don't fly MH-53Es. That's the Navy minesweeper variant. Marines fly the CH-53E.

Those helicopters are incredible. I think they're transitioning to the CH-53K model now which I've heard is an absolute beast of a machine.

I was reading, again on reddit so TIFWIW, that 3d MAW has the highest accident rate in Marine aviation and has a culture of frick-frick bullshite as well as get your flying hours in at all costs. Again, TIFWIW.

That’s all Marine Corps Aviation not just 3rd MAW. Long hours at the squadron level getting hours and qualifications. Lots of hazing in mech shops for junior Marines who don’t have quals. Have to push hard so they can get experience for maintenance and maintaining the flight schedule. Deployment schedule for most units is 7 on 7 off which usually was about a year between each deployment with CAX, WTI and other training events when not deployed.
