And you sound so intelligent! Name calling is the obvious sign of a highly intelligent and articulate person.

Since im so stupid why not tell me where im wrong instead of being a typically simple minded fool and just calling me a name - even if you used a big bad word like fricking to drive it home Einstein?

I guess it's more that they just don't like it than that they don't understand. I mean, we all understand how history and context infuses words and phrases with meaning. No one can simply turn blinders on for shits and giggles.

For the record, I'm more than comfortable repeating the word, but I don't use it in my everyday parlance (not even with a 'ah). And I certainly think it's inappropriate in most settings--especially public and professional settings.

Seems like an odd bone to pick, though. I'd think it would cause more consternation among educated and professional blacks than 30yo whites, but people's minds seem to be getting squirrely lately.

Well, one was a joke and the other was used in a derogatory manner.

please quit using this thread as a platform to spew all of this political bs

andrew harrison used "n*gga* like you and I would use "dude, man, guy, etc.". No racist intent behind it

the white girl in the picture used "n**ger* with a negative connotation and full racist intent

black people over decades has desensitized the word and embedded it into their vocabulary. Not all of them, but most. They don't use it with racist intent. White people usually cannot say it without receiving backlash. Yes, a double standard. But the world is not ending because you can't call your old lady your n**ga.

If I were black I bet you'd have a name you'd like to call me...

I try to use the N-word as much as possible to try to make it more socially acceptable.

My wife and the teachers at my children's school don't like it when I use it.

The racist one. Jokes can be racist, you know. I mean, saying n**gers are why your wifi sucks is pretty racist

My point was if she gets suspended for making a racist joke then everyone that uses the word on campus should be suspended. Do you agree?

does not equal

It's not so much the word as it was her blaming black people for her wifi going out. She literally could have written "black people" on the board and still got suspended. I mean, come on fellas. This isn't rocket science.

I'm fairly certain that her intent was not to actually mean that black people were stealing her wifi. The use of the term n***ers in her case was simply a poor attempt at humor. To say you know her comment was racist simply because of the color of her skin is in fact racist.

Eta: I actually think it would have been a whole lot worse if she had said "black people were stealing her wifi".

Well what was the intended meaning behind the punchline?

Obviously I don't. What black guy used the word as a "racist joke"? To that kid, who probably doesn't come from the best of backgrounds, saying "n!gga" is literally no different than saying "dude". I didn't come up in that environment and I no longer spend too much time around a bunch of teenagers who throw the word around and this is not difficult for me to understand--at all. There was no racial context there. I think his coach should have suspended him for being a shitty sport and saying "frick that guy", but there's simply no racial component here.

And once upon a time when I wasn't pretty much exclusively in office settings, I heard young latin and white sailors (flatbill types) use the word in a setting of perceived camaraderie, and I gave them the same "knock it off" that I've given the black kids--because it's not appropriate. But I never thought of running it up the chain as any kind of "racial" incident.

Oh, I agree. I have family and friends who will drop a racist joke every now and then.

Definitely. Actually, it was the worst word she could use. "Black people" or "blacks" would've probably gotten her suspended also.

A white girl saying n**gers are why her wifi out, joke or not, is racist. It's cut-and-dry. A black girl saying crackers are why her wifi out is racist.

This debate will never end until people get this through their head. It's like they don't want to understand this.

Everybody understands this. But it doesn't make it right.

Arguing that a person can or can't do something simply because of the color of their skin is racist. There is no getting around that.
