US vs European amateur sports models

I always thought the US model tieing sports to schools made sense. I participated in scholarship sports in college.
Still am friends with HS and college teammates.
But, all this nonsense from NCAA guys got me revaluating this.
For example almost all major CFB and Basketball players are in total nonsense majors. They aren't really "students" its a fancy minor league.
European schools don't have sports. They rely on a club/community model.
This allows for participation into adulthood.
I think it's a legitimate question.
Should we ditch the whole scholastic sports model?
Only in college?
Thoughts?

Truth is probably that it the collegiate system works better for some sports and the European model works better for others.

When you step away and look at it from a place of non-bias, tying sports to education is a really, really dumb model.

I think our model is working extremely well.

No, don’t ditch it. Have both. The non-students can go to the semi-pro clubs, and the college teams will be made up of real students. Well, except Alabama.

IMO, I think there should be two parallel systems.
1. A city or state based minor league, geared toward the players earning some income, development of their skill/talent, and making a living playing sports. In my mind, this would be all the 4 and 5 star guys (who may not necessarily want to pursue a degree ) playing against each other for a couple of years to develop themselves as players and ultimately make it to the pros.
AND
2. A collegiate system truly built for amateur athletics. Guys who are long shots at best to be pros and just wanna play football and represent their school while earning a real degree. (Most NCAA sports/teams are this already, but the major conferences (esp SEC) have become a defacto minor league.
