The crew of a guided-missile destroyer fired three missiles to defend themselves and another ship after being attacked on Sunday in the Red Sea by two presumed cruise missiles fired by Iran-backed Houthi-forces, USNI News has learned.
During the attack against USS Mason (DDG-87), the ship’s crew fired the missiles to defend the guided-missile destroyer and nearby USS Ponce (AFSB(I)-15) from two suspected cruise missiles fired from the Yemini shore, two defense officials told USNI News.
Mason launched two Standard Missile-2s (SM-2s) and a single Enhanced Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) to intercept the two missiles that were launched about 7 P.M. local time. In addition to the missiles, the ship used its Nulka anti-ship missile decoy, the sources confirmed. Mason was operating in international waters north of the strait of Bab el-Mandeb at the time of the attack.
According to a defense official on Monday, Mason “employed onboard defensive measures” against the first suspected cruise missile, “although it is unclear whether this led to the missile striking the water or whether it would have struck the water anyway.” The official did not specify that the defensive measure was a missile fired from the ship.
USNI News understands, as of Monday, the crew of the ship was uncertain if the suspected cruise missile was taken out by an SM-2 or went into the water on its own. In the Monday statement, the Pentagon said an investigation was ongoing.

“It might be the first time the SM-2 used against an actual threat for which it was designed,” Clark said. “It’s definitely the first time ESSM has been used… This is obviously a huge deal.”

Last week a Houthi-launched cruise missile caused significant damage to the UAE-leased HSV Swift – an unarmed aluminum high-speed transport vessel used to move supplies and wounded in the region, UAE officials said. UAE is part of a Saudi Arabia led coalition that has fought against the Iran backed Shi’a Houthis in Yemen since last year.

The attacks on Mason and Ponce follow an airstrike that killed more than 140 people and injured more than 500 during a funeral in Yemen. The Saudi-led bombing has prompted a review of U.S. support of the conflict fought between the collation and the Houthis since last year, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.
Prior to the Saudi strike, Houthi rebels have told Saudi Arabia and its allies — via Iranian state media — to stay out of Yemen, “territorial waters.”

Is the name, "cruise missile" generic of a type of missile? I thought that it was a specific weapons type created by and for the U.S. military. I'm not military guy, so forgive my ignorance.

Clinton will be given even less respect on a National Security level.
It's just a matter of time until something horrible happens.

If things keep going the same way, and we have a worthless pres in charge, things will get bad. The world has not seen the true capability of the U.S. military in many years. The decoy missel is something very few people know about. Wrath of of military will become very evident when that are put in harms way regardless of who our pres is.

A cruise missile is a guided missile used against terrestrial targets that remains in the atmosphere and flies the major portion of its flight path at approximately constant speed. Cruise missiles are designed to deliver a large warhead over long distances with high accuracy; that is, small circular error probability. Modern cruise missiles are capable of travelling at supersonic or high subsonic speeds, are self-navigating, and are able to fly on a non-ballistic, extremely low-altitude trajectory. They are distinct from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in several ways: the cruise missile is a single use weapon which is always sacrificed in the mission; it is not intended to provide aerial reconnaissance; and the warhead is integrated directly into the hull of the vehicle and cannot be separated. There is considerable overlap between cruise missiles and anti-ship missiles

quote:Yes. It's a type. The first was invented by the nazis in WW2. Theirs was called a V-1 rocket, or "buzz bomb" because of the noise it made as it flew overhead. When the buzzing stopped, that's when you knew something was about to go boom.

Things the British knew all too well.

I have been saying it since 2003. We went to war with the wrong dictator. Not that Saddam didn't deserve to be defeated but Iran's involvement in international terrorism constituted a greater threat to our national security than Iraq.
Saddam had the hajis bottled up and under control which is more than we can say of our supposed "friends" in Saudi Arabia

This is where I authorize that destroyer to turn that portion of the Yemeni coast into a crater. Then here's the kicker. We go about our business! WE don't invade, don't regime chage, dont nation build, we neutralize the threat and move on with our lives.

We should have left Sadaam alone and took out Iran in the beginning. Frick all of them though really.
