It's not every day you see a yota fuel pump go bad. Not saying it couldn't have but the chances are very slim.

He's been driving it for 2.5 years with the check engine light on, so there's no telling what all else was going on.

Change the fuel filter bc that is easy. If that doesn't solve it, find out where the fuel pump is located. Can either buy a repair manual at AutoZone, etc or just go there and look at it. Probably can find same info on youtube videos, etc. If pump is located in the gas tank, that's a giant pain in the arse.
Auto Zone will also check the error message (CEL). Isn't usually helpful.

What made me think it was the pump is he said it was running bad for awhile before it shut down, but i do also agree with you about your guess,it's very possible

Which has me believing it has had bad o2 sensors for a while and all of a sudden the crank sensor went bad. Or broke timing belt.Need him to answer my first question. And if it is a fuel pump gone bad, don't drop the tank. Take the bed bolts out of the drivers side and partially lose the passenger side bed bolts. Disconnect the filler neck and lift up the bed and prop up with a board.

Sounds like you need a new Johnson Rod.

I've done 2 like that and yes it's so much easier. There is a couple youtubes on how to do this.

When cranking, does the motor spin over effortlessly? Like really fast and sounds like it has not compression? Bout the only thing ths will kill those yota motors is a broken timing belt or crankshaft position sensor.

Sounds like cam or crank position sensor

Sounds a lot like the timing belt. I'm almost sure it's the timing belt actually.
Posted on 1/22/16 at 8:54 am to BoostAddict
Sounds like low wiper fluid or low tire pressure.

Start off with the fuel pump, but those toyotas can go for 200k and be good. The timing belt is gonna cost you a good bit to fix.

I guess nobody asked you if you could hear the fuel pump priming when you turned the key to run. I also believe the 3.4 is an interference engine, so you would've known if the belt broke. I'd look for a loose wire or connection after reading that code.
FWIW, I drove my 04 with a bad o2 for two years. Fixed it to sell the truck.

Yeah, someone asked. Didn't hear anything

Finding the problem and getting it fixed right the first time is what you should do. Don't start throwing parts at it or you'll spend more money in the long run. Go to a reputable mechanic like AGCO.
