That depends on a few factors and varies slightly by fraternity.
If the fraternity doesn't own their house then the dues go to house payments among other things. This is usually only true for newer fraternities though.
In general, dues go to house upkeep, mixers, formals, parties, and other random events like philanthropy week.
You're not paying for friends. You've already made the friends before you start paying for anything. If you don't make friends and people don't like you, you'll be asked to leave during pledging, but more than likely you wouldn't get a bid in the first place.

Part of your dues also go to insurance, too, for situations like this.

I really don't get the hatred for Greeks. I guess it is either based on personal interactions, or buying into popular stereotypes.
I was a "GDI" at LSU, but I had a lot of Greek friends at the time (and now). Dated some sorority girls, so I went to some of their functions/dances. I was certainly never made to feel an outcast because of it.
Of course, that was 30+ years ago, so maybe it has changed.

The DA is just sending the strongest message he can. The Greeks will chill for a little while. Which is what they should do. This will drag on for a long time. Parents of the deceased will have a say in what ultimately happens to these guys.

It is a tragedy that was unfortunately caused by the misguided decisions that accompany the stupidity of youth. It is disgusting that so many here view the kid's life and those of his friends with the same emotional maturity as a 8th grade girl talking about the other cliques on the playground.
