I'm so sad for the parents .. this has been a long week of waiting to see. Even if it's not good news, a plan could still be made or attempt to be made. Not knowing and waiting for ever for I think would so incredibly hard.

couldn't those be ruled out with bloodwork?
Just blood? No. You need spinal fluid.

I know, I was referring to being super unstable and then vent ontop of that for a week from what it sounds like, not likely to get one.

Basically anything that irritates brain tissue can cause swelling, just as with any area of the body. I’m sure they’ve done a spinal tap to rule out hydrocephalus. If the swelling becomes too bad they will take off a flap of the skull to reduce the pressure. If they haven’t done this yet it’s either a good sign or the doctors are incompetent.

Haven't heard of any procedures being done and I guess if a spinal tap HASN'T been done then it WON'T be done now. I mean if they won't roll him to CT on a gurney how would they ever get a spinal tap?

I'm hoping that they're seeking other opinions while they wait for the biopsies.

Nurse, think it’s possible to have a malformation that causes the build up of fluid in the brain show itself later than in childhood/infancy? Just wondering.

They just need to tilt him over for spinal tap.

Even without turning the patient over there are ways to check brain pressure, such as looking at the eyes. If the pressure was at a potentially fatal level they would do something to relieve said pressure, like a skull flap or drilling into the skull.

Disclaimer: I’m a Neuropsychologist, not an MD.

eta: to check for NPH (normal pressure hydrocephalus) evaluate the 3W’s.
Wet: Urinary incontinence
Wobbly: Gait abnormality
Wacky: Dementia, memory problems

I had a hypertensive encephalopy emergency where my brain was swelling and beleeding. They did a spinal tap and full blood work. The MRI showed the damage and I was supposed to pass within 24 hours. If I were to live my family was told I'd be in a vegetative state. I'm alive and typing but I now have epilepsy and other organ compications. My BP was 290+/190+. I went into cardiac arrest.

Yeah, it's been rough. Dissected a minor brain artery. I had a cardiac ablation last July as the electrophysiology of my heart got rewired. I have migraines, cluster headaches along with seizures.

There must have been a scan or MRI at some point.

And no need for a scan if they have some type of ICP monitoring. If the pressure is through the roof they may not want to look at them funny.

But to get to this point with no scan? Ever? I know I've coded 3 in CT scan and had several other ball puckering scans where I'm hovering over the CT tech ready to GTFO.

He did have either Ct or MRI where they saw what they thought was a tumor. Went in and it wasn't a tumor but they took two biopsies to send out to two other facilities. This was I think Monday of last week. I'm told due to weather biopsies got sent out on Friday. Wth??

You said Houston. Houston was ice locked hell last week. MD Anderson is where a biopsy was going I assume. The entire med center was probably in disaster mode.

Pathologists read biopsies. They don't get in huge hurries. Cancer doesn't spread THAT fast and other samples are from dead people.

But what if it's not cancer and it can lead to some answers? I'm sure this childs parents are in a hurry. But I get your point -- really I do.

Being this unstable, knowing what it is is probably secondary. If the person can't survive a scan they aren't stable for surgical intervention.

Also, we cannot handle ice storms down here. Those samples could have ended up in traffic.
