but does going to NG OCS fall under the same protection as deployments job wise? As in do they have to hold your job for you if you go to OCS?

I'll never understand a 13B willing to put him/herself through that ordeal...except for the rank-chasers.
Worst six months anyone could wish upon themselves.

Also, just curious how long does "applying" to finally getting in take for becoming an officer?

Okay. I hear you. But would it be realistic to say 3months or more like a year?
Posted on 7/28/17 at 3:16 pm to themasterpater
I really don't know because there are so many factors that affect it. What job you want, when it may be available, all your personnel stuff to be squared away, which OTS's are open for enrollment and when do they start, and the ever-existing "needs of the Army/Navy/AF/MC" all play a role in determining that timeline.
That's something only your recruiter can tell you with any accuracy.

can be done, especially if there's a Republican in the White House, 90 day wonders they're called, and of course if there's a war, going on that helps too

I enlisted in the Navy when I was 23. I'm around several people who enlisted when they were 27-29 on a daily basis.
I literally just asked a guy I work with (who enlisted when he was 28) your pros/cons question.
His response:
Biggest pro for him - Much easier to stand out as a leader. You can use your age and life experience to get yourself into leadership positions early on in your Military career.
Biggest con for him - Living with people who are 18 years old with no previous work experience. Sometimes you'll live with people who have been out of high school for 2 months.

I've thought about that. Degree is in CM from LSU. I'm a project "engineer" for a construction company. Really an Assistant Project Manager is probably more appropriate. If anything I'd be a plumber and run my own business, if I'm gna be a tradesman I'm going to own my business rather than work for someone else.
But that still doesn't quite seem to measure up to serving your country. I don't really see how serving could be a negative life decision.
Well shite, there's your answer. Enlist as an engineer trade with LANG. You learn a trade, serve your country, and you can come back home and use your trade and degree to run your own construction company.

Thanks man I appreciate that. And tell the guy you asked thanks for me too!

That does sound like a good idea. What is "LANG"?

And if you're at a shitty post or old barracks you might be sharing your bedroom with him. Nothing like a bunch of kids pounding beers in your room at 2300 on a work night.

And Army green-suiter engineering isn't the same as private sector engineering.

I'm also a CM alum from LSU. Was a 51T right out of highschool for 6years. Finished my duty right as I graduated. Best experience you can put on a resume. BTW, I think my old MOS number changed to 21T, surveyor/drafter/soils analysis technician. Was really helpful for college and finding summer jobs either as a surveyor or drafter.

I wouldn't call it a negative life decision, but it definitely will not pay as good as a degree in CM would and on top of that you will have to deal with a lot of suck and bullshite. Especially if you go the infantry route like most.
I've had multiple training occurrences where we would go out in the middle of the woods for weeks, dig holes all day that we would pull security/sleep in, get little to no sleep, have very disorganized leadership hounding you 24/7, all to only to take contact a total 2 times. Like I said before, its 95% bullshite and 5% what you signed up to do. But if you think that is what you'll like then go for it.

Now I will say this, 21T has a long arse MOS school at 18 weeks. May be an issue if you're married with kids, because you'll be on a private's wages for 8 months. When you get home, go back to work in construction, go to drill and summer camp with your NG unit, get some extra paychecks and benefits from it along with a resume' booster. If you really like it, you can volunteer to deploy somewhere or go full time NG working for the state.

I'm single so I'm not worried about all that. I am in Virginia though but I assume it's the same as Louisiana.

I'm actually about to graduate in CM. Military experience is a HUGE plus in this field. I'd say its the main reason I've landed the internships I've done in college.

Yeah maybe I get some field experience in the military then come back as a super. I knew this board would be helpful since there seems to be a lot of vets here
