Thanks for bringing a logical view to this.

You gonna be a SEAL baw?
Posted on 7/31/17 at 1:53 pm to upgrayedd
So far I'm think USAF. I'm open to all though with the exception of the navy.
Posted on 7/31/17 at 1:53 pm to DirtyMikeandtheBoys
Naw baw. If I go specops it'd be in a different branch.

What's your degree?
Any jobs piqued your interest in specific branch?

Good points but i thought he should get a sense of it.
My mom bought a lot of stuff in asia which we took back to states. Custom mahogany furniture weighs a lot.
My sister still complains about going to so many schools.
Nowadays internet makes a lot possible. Staying in touch.

Tell us again about the time a well placed rock thrown by you saved your young sibling from a kidnapping at the hands of the racist Texan ruffians.

Degree is in Construction Management from LSU 3.4 gpa. I could continue doing construction or not. So far in USAF the top 3 would be pilot, STO, or whatever TACP's officer equivalent is. I did see some civil engineer options which I think I could do although I don't have a CE degree. Other than that I'd have to simply know about more options that may interest me.

Would a 3.3 gpa in CM from LSU be technical enough and competitive enough for pilots?
Goodness. You need to go talk to some recruiters, and honestly I'd go talk to 2 different ones for each branch. My recommendation is not to leave a branch out right now before talking to recruiters. Then you also should try to talk to someone enlisted and an officer in every branch. This is a big decision to leave a steady job. You don't want to hate your life for 2 years and have multiple years after that committed to something you half arse decided on.
Unless you know a high ranking officer with pull, the chance of you getting a pilot or other highly sought after career right now is slim to none. The military is very competitive for any job that people want unless you are going as said MD, JD, Engineer, etc. A high majority of pilots for example come from either the academy or ROTC. Or they know some people.
Again, don't just say "I don't want to be Navy and live on a boat". Plenty of Navy guys especially officers in certain fields don't go on boats. That's the same with all branches, there are shitty Air Force officer jobs too.
Go officer, you won't regret it. You probably will regret enlisting with a degree. But don't expect every branch to take you as an officer right now, it could be 12 months or more.
ETA: You really really need to push hard into getting in to Construction in some form or fashion to continue your current field. I don't know what your options are at all, but I'd talk to every branch about it. The military is always building crap, someone is in charge of it.

Good luck bro.
OCS is easy as long as your physically prepared. The more physically prepped you are the easier the mental stuff will be.
Run. A lot. 25-30 miles a week. More if you can.

Yeah, some of the furniture purchases can bite you. I bought a shrunk (large cabinet/bar) in Germany that almost screwed me but we needed new couches anyway so we tossed the old ones and made weight. Not saying weight isn't a consideration but they give you a pretty decent weight allowance and free movers are always nice, just watch out because they'll steal you blind if you let them.

It's not for everyone but for every military brat that hates moving there's 10 kids that are sick and tired of living in the same town they've lived in their entire lives.

In the USAF do officers choose their path or do they just get plugged in where it's needed?
Posted on 7/31/17 at 2:24 pm to ThatMakesSense
I have no idea that's why I started this thread.
Posted on 7/31/17 at 2:29 pm to themasterpater
Damn I didn't see this thread going 12 pages.
OP, If you aren't a runner you should become one time:now.
And when at Basic just remember to play the game. Just do the stupid stuff they tell you to don't and say as little as possible. Don't volunteer for anything.
I agree with you in that if I were going active duty it would be AF. Those guys have it made no matter where they are and same pay.

Yeah I mean I knew there are a lot of vets, still though surprised at all the help.
Not a runner yet, but working on it.
AF just seems to be the most technical/intelligent so I figured I'd be the best fit in that one.

FYI. AF advances people at the slowest rate in the military. So be prepared to be an O1-O2 for awhile

At my graduation I asked my drill sergeant to take a picture with me and he said "Who the hell are you, Private?". That's how you want to play it. Don't volunteer to be platoon guide or anything like that. It just brings extra stress and nobody cares once you're out of basic. Although I have no idea what OCS is like in that regard.

Take that intelligent aspect into account though. Lot of people with 3.3 gpa or higher in degree fields more desirable to the USAF.

You can also find a lot of those same technical jobs in other branches and be promoted faster. But they don't have the same QOL.
The main complaint I hear from AF people is that it's not quite the military experience they'd envisioned. They still loved it, though, don't get me wrong.
