According to the police’s statements, he’s still a person of interest and not a suspect. If they find him, all they can do is ask him to go home. He can tell them to get lost.

Maybe the are just worried he would kill himself having never had the chance to be interviewed about being the last to see GP.

That seems most likely to me. A fight which escalated to the point of violence or she becomes distraught enough to kill herself seem like the most probable explanations.
All these serial killer riffs seem overly complicated and ridiculous to me.

He's the only person the authorities have that can help find the girl, or find out where the body is.
