This is only according to the parents I believe? The parents told the police he was missing on Thursday and they hadn't seen him since Monday.
But I don't think anyone else saw him for days before that?
So for all we know he was on the run for days before Monday

You're ignoring the fact (read that as truth) that he wasn't even a suspect at that time. He was a person of interest, but no restrictions were put on his travel and no one would be breaking the law to help him go anywhere he wanted to go.
If you're worried about truth, that is a truth.
