My guess is that they were hiking in the area across the creek bed from where the van was parked, got into an argument and he wound up killing her there and left her there.
If he had killed her near or in the van, it seems like he would have driven her body to a more remote location but who knows what a panicking dude would do. There is still the hitchhike he did on the 29th that figures in somehow if the tiktok chick is to be believed.

Has there been confirmation that the place where the investigators found the body is even remotely near the place seen in the dash cam video?
Edit: I mean, now that we think that the “figure” out in the field was probably just a visual illusion, is there even really much in the video implicating it as the supposed murder site?

The van door closing happens while the van is still far off in the distance but it's clear as day actually happening. The right side door shuts.

I think he killed her in the dark at the van. Probably strangulation.
He had to carry the body in the dark, not wanting to get lost himself, also carrying a body across that country maybe he thought he had gone farther than he had and just dumped the body.

Not sure, but it could mean she was alive if logistically he couldn't be at the van and in the town or where he was seen hitchhiking.
