I rented a bike for a week here and loving every minute so far. Everything is a few minutes away and I am not worried about being hit.

How does that make sense? We don't even have good enough roads for vehicles so let's designate more for cyclists

well, in theory, if we designate more bike lanes, that would encourage more people to use them, thus reducing the stress on our current roads, which would reduce the wear and tear on those roads
so in theory, it does make sense...
not sure how well it works in practice though

Would really only work in major cities it seems, where everyone works within a 10-20 minute bike ride from work.
A place like Gonzales where majority of people that visit live in Dutchtown, Galvez, St. Amant, Donaldsonville, and Geismer would fail since many of those location are 20 minutes by car. (Depends on where you live in each one, as some are 5 minutes)

I can't see it working for BR personally...I'm sure there are other cities that it would be more practical though

I can't tell you how many times in college I got in my car alone and drove less than five miles when I could have biked. I would have saved so much money and been in such better shape had I done that.
I wish people would get bikes more and ride them more, especially for these local, short distances. We would all be healthier, safer, and we'd have more money to burn.
