A United flight from Newark, New Jersey, to St. Louis was diverted Thursday (March 15) after the airline learned it had an unauthorized passenger onboard: a dog. The pet was bound for Akron, Ohio, but was mistakenly loaded onto the St. Louis flight, company spokeswoman Natalie Noonan told The Washington Post on Saturday.

And so the plane followed the dog's itinerary. Flight 3996 banked toward northeast Ohio after the airline "chose the fastest option to reunite the dog with his family," Noonan said.

The incident was United's third dog-related mishap just this week; fortunately this time, it led to a happier conclusion than the first. On Monday, a French bulldog puppy named Kokito suffocated to death in an overhead bin, after a flight attendant insisted the owner stow the dog there for a three-hour flight from Houston to New York.

Then on Tuesday, another case of mistaken canine identity occurred on a United flight, sending a dog owner into a frenzy when she discovered a Great Dane in the place of her German Shepard, Irgo, in a facility at the Kansas City airport.

United Airlines and the police appear to hate dogs.

I like dogs, but I'd be livid if my flight was diverted due to a dog on board the wrong plane.

They just need to change their name to Continental and start over.

Why can’t these comfort dogs get boarded at the vet, like everyone else does? Pansy arse, pussies.

As a Frenchie owner, this hurts my heart. But I’d have to blame the pet owner as much as the airline. Who the hell would put their pet in an overhead bin? And I can almost guarantee the owner paid a ridiculous price for that puppy (in airfare and time alone). I’d have deplaned and gone a different route. frick United, but frick the owner too.

Just fly Delta or Southwest.

Unlike United, they get it right more often than not.

Here’s a solution. Stop letting pets on the fricking plane. I’m allergic to that shite but no one gives a frick.

I'm convinced United is doing this on purpose now.

I'm a dog person. But a dog isn't a good enough reason to divert a flight.
