This is cruddy. Everyone should be responsible enough to their community to at least by insurance. But it’s very little. Everyone should make a conscious effort and pay for uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage so they don’t have to worry about this. Or even just MedPay

Keep your cards on you. Especially if you're driving out of state. But you are right on about the database. We are able to enter information directly into the state of Georgia database to show coverage. Insurance companies are required by law to also notify the state about a lapse or cancellation of coverage.
