There is so much ignorance being expressed in this thread by people who live in or near New Orleans.

Most of those people didn’t choose to move to New Orleans from another first world country.

I am sure about that. Like anywhere on the planet if you are a criminal you are likely to be involved in criminal activity. If you are not the likelihood of your being involved in criminal activity is very low. Yes, for criminals and poor citizens who live in crime ridden neighborhoods in Belize the crime rate is high. Expats tend to not be poor by Belize standards of poverty and tend to not live in crime ridden neighborhoods and also tend to not be involved in criminal activity. What is being suggested is that living in Dunwoody (north Atlanta) is as likely to result in someone being the victim of crime as living in East Point or Vine City. I get it, crime is skeery and if you suffer from irrational fear and paranoia and can't bring yourself to leave the house without a pistol you are already living in a shithole in your brain. For those who do not suffer from irrational fears and other mental health disorders Belize is perfectly acceptable. I can not imagine being an adult and especially an adult man and living in fear of crime but I recognize a heaping pile of adult men do indeed imagine they are under constant threat 24-7.....

I know exactly what you are saying. Oklahoma is an open carry state, and I see fat cowboys walking around in public showing their wares.

To me, that is stupid. It invites some criminal to try and take it from you because you are an easy target (fat and out of shape).

When I carry, which is not often, it is concealed.

If you are one of those people who carries no matter what or where, you have already self-defined the area you live in to be a shite hole.

In Oklahoma, there is probably less that 10 square miles total that fit that description.

No, some of them chose to move there from within a first world country.

My point is, even if they grew up in a safe part of Louisianna, they don't think twice about going into New Orleans for a Saints game or other social events.

But someone says they are going to move to Belize and they go off the rails about crime rates.

Belize is awesome. Could move there in a heartbeat and still love America.

That's a lot of words when you just could have said that you were wrong when you said crime there is relatively low. Belize is a very small country so you're never far from the bad areas.

Wait, are you saying that when people go into NOLA for a game they don't think about the safest route, which neighborhoods to not go through, which lots seem best lit and safest to park in, and aren't more aware of their surroundings than they'd be in their small town?

Seems foolish to me.

I’m currently fed up with the American circus of clowns and ready to leave myself. I only have a few years until retirement and it can’t come soon enough. Me and my money and hopefully my kids are outta here.

I know a guy that moved to Ecuador after retirement, absolutely utopian setup, lived like a king for pennies on the US dollar, came back home because it was too boring

At my age, boring is awesome. I want to be bored. This circus is too much. Thanks for the tip I’ll look into Equador.

I’ve traveled all over the world and I love and appreciate so many other cultures. But there is nowhere better to live than the United States. If Harris had won, my arse would have still been right here for the next four years.

I’ve traveled all over the world as well, albeit not at my leisure but on the military’s time.
Not trying to troll, but out of curiosity I have to ask what your reasons are for wanting to live here? Too many family and friends here? Other countries not being very “Americanized” ?

For myself, there are just too many other options with better healthcare, different scenery, better general safety, and the ability to use the place as home base while traveling around that part of the globe. I’m looking at Albania, Greece, and Croatia, and a couple countries in Latin America. Also, lately looking at South Korea and Japan.

Re Belize
My husband got a bee in his bonnet that it would be a good place to move. I bought him three different tour books on Belize and a map and said: read them and plot what you'd do in a month's time.
'nuf said.

Choose wisely...those "cheap" countries are also prone to political and military violence and "leaders" who are not afraid to freeze foreigners assets. Not saying it'd happen to you but the odds of it happening there are probably a couple hundred times more likely than the US. There are lots of boring places in our country...we could all find one if we wanted to.

I have a great uncle or something that fled to Uruguay when FDR took power apparently.

He was worried about America becoming socialist and I guess Uruguay back then was very capitalist

No, I'm saying that NOLA as a whole is not a safe place. Neither is Belize City.

But people who are OK with going to NOLA are saying moving to Belize is a bad idea when the person is not going to be living anywhere near Belize City.
