Josh Moon: MPD has lots of explaining to do in shooting death

Kimberly Gunn, sister of Greg Gunn, grieves where her brother was shot in a more
There was another one.
Another town. Another unarmed black man. Another seemingly innocuous encounter with police. Another odd explanation of how it all turned deadly.
The difference is that this one is here — in Montgomery. In one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, Mobile Heights.
Down McElvy Street, a few hundred yards away from Carver Elementary School, 58-year-old Gregg Gunn was shot dead by a Montgomery Police officer after … something happened.
Exactly what that something was that led to Gunn’s death is unclear.

Shock, sadness fill neighborhood after man killed by police
Walking around the Mobile Heights neighborhood, talking to neighbors and witnesses and getting a feel for the people, the neighborhood and the climate, it’s fairly obvious that Gunn wasn’t anyone’s first choice to wind up on the bad end of a cop encounter.
Sure, Gunn “was no angel,” as his brother, Kenny, put it, but there’s a big gap between angel and threatening the life of a police officer.
Gunn was arrested a dozen years ago for stealing a refrigerator and hand trucks. He had charges for bad checks the year before that. And he had outstanding traffic tickets. But there was no violence, no altercations with police, no signs of a dangerous man.
“He was scared to death of police,” Kenny said. “He might run from them, but he wouldn’t attack one. No way.”

Perspective: Police, Greg Gunn and the search for facts
Family and neighbors said Gunn was the guy everyone in the neighborhood knew on a first-name basis, who cut the grass for at least four neighbors, who walked the neighborhood often as he went back and forth to and from his girlfriend’s house. Gunn's father was one of the original black officers on the MPD force and raised his children to respect cops.
They’re at a loss for how he wound up dead, killed by a cop.
From the collection of at least a half-dozen witnesses and probably two dozen people who were privy to some portion of the events of late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, there are a few things upon which most people agree.
Gunn was leaving a neighborhood card game a block over sometime around 3 a.m. A female companion who left the game at the same time said she and Gunn saw the police cruiser near the house as they were starting to leave. They walked a short distance and then went their separate ways.
Somewhere over the next few hundred feet — in the neighborhood where Gunn had spent most of his life — an altercation between cop and Gunn ensued. What started the altercation isn’t clear, but neighbors said a rash of car break-ins a couple of blocks over had been mentioned by police.
A “slight struggle,” as Montgomery Police Chief Ernest Finley called it, took place. Then a chase that ended up in the front yard of Colvin Hinson, Gunn’s next-door neighbor. Hinson heard Gunn pounding on his front door, screaming for help and calling out for his mother.

fired. At his news conference later, Finley said the officer saw a weapon on Gunn.
It turned out to be a painter’s stick.
What happened after the shooting raised the ire of Gunn’s family and neighbors even more. Gunn’s mother said she could hear her son screaming for help, but paramedics that arrived on the scene were turned away. Colvin and Muhammad also heard Gunn’s screams and confirmed that paramedics never went over to check on Gunn.

You can't watch any of the video clips in the link. It's just one commercial after another. Definitely a sad story.

First off... anything written by Josh Moon should be taken with a grain of salt. He is looking for clicks with most every story he writes. He is as big a SJW as there is. And it's a darn shame because he can be a really good investigative journalist when he wants to be. But sadly, he takes the low road too often.
Now, the incident in question. Evidently, from what I have read there is video of it. People need to let the facts in the case come out before making any conclusions. If there is evidence the officer did anything illegal, then he should be arrested and treated accordingly.

I don't think an unarmed man with a paint stick deserved to die. But let's quash the meme that racist cops are running around shooting people just because of the color of their skin.
The washington post researched police shootings in 2015, they found that of the 990 people shot and killed by the police in 2015, only 258 were black.
That 990 seems high and we really need to address the militarization of the police. But it doesn't help when our national leaders are fear mongering by spreading the lie blacks are being systematically targeted by the police.

So he was using the paint stick as a jimmy to break into cars?

I can't believe how many nerves of steel and can keep calm under any amount of pressure dudes post on this site. I bet if the OT were the police, there would never be an incident again.

He dindu nuffin. He's just a poor unarmed black man gunned down by them racist cops. He would never hurt nobody.
Yes, I'm making fun of the people who will inevitably make fun of this horrific situation.

My first thought as well:
"Mr Gunn, put your hands up and turn around!"
"Gun?!"
Bang, bang.
All it takes is one skittish cop.

quote:Guess what then? You shouldn't be a cop, or at least one who goes out on patrol. Sure it is natural for everyone to get scared or nervous in a situation, but as a cop you have to expect dangerous situations to happen a lot and you have to be a lot calmer and not be so trigger happy. Plus this was an old guy, with no weapon at all. Another reason why we need body cameras on cops. Both sides should want it, as it proves who was truly right and not going on what he said and she said.

Live by the Gunn, die by the gun.

I don't think anybody who's not a cop doesn't want it.
Cops don't want it because they are fallible and make mistakes, and one mistake today can at a minimum end your career, and with a little less luck, throw you in jail.
And TBH, I'm not sure the standard I want to set for our police force is perfection or jail.

The cops don't want it for obvious reasons. If the general public knew how cops treat people on a daily basis that party would be over and they would have to raise their professional standards.

Since you posted this crap, why don't you start a thread about the girl that was killed in Virginia a day after she was sworn in on her first shift?

"What's your last name, son?"
"It's Gunn, sir."
"Everybody get down. He says he has a gun."

Why did they kill a guy without any arms?
Posted on 2/28/16 at 9:41 am to hg
So cops shot him and then wouldn't let the paramedics tend to him? If true, frick those cops and I hope they rot in hell. If true, the riots will be well warranted
