It does not work well for the driver in smaller compact cities like NOLA and Manhattan.
Uber/Lyft is just fine in NOLA. I know people that gross over $50k a year doing it full time. Doing it full time sucks IMO, but you can make decent money if you know how to do it.

Under the proposed system, drivers would earn a gross income of $25.76 an hour, which would equate to $15 after deductions, including taxes and vehicle running costs.
So they’re really asking for $25.76 an hour.

Sucks that they were duped into an unsustainable system. What laws are NYC Uber/Lyft drivers breaking btw?
They are operating taxis.

Most people do it as supplemental income. But I would argue that in New Orleans, it's a limited thing. The only way I can see you are making good money is if you are making airport runs and at that the best ones are weekend runs to the airport so that you can start picking up on the way back.

It’s a taxi but they use cute nomenclature calling it ridesharing. Very clever of you.
You’re missing the point. I don’t like paying tax but thst doesn’t mean I get to use nomenclature in an attempt to recharacterize income, a sale, property tax or a professional licensure fee that requires me to fork over money. Government involvement in the taxi business sucks and does a huge disservice to those small businesses drowning while trying to keep up with the crappy rules.

The weekdays are a much better opportunity for airport runs due to various conferences, work things etc. Also more cruises leave during the week since they leave on Sundays Mondays and Thursdays most of the time. Plus people generally come for longer than just a weekend. Return trips are pretty much guaranteed regardless of the day unless you are taking someone to the airport between 2AM and 7AM, but even then sometimes you get lucky.
Weekend nights do usually offer more demand, but there are also more drivers out, so it can be a wash. The biggest thing is maximizing any bonus opportunities.
But there is something going on almost every night somewhere in the city to drive demand, so your claim that NOLA is limited I just don't agree with. We're one of a few cities that has bars open basically 24/7/365, and we're a major tourist destination.

No I;m not, You're obviously a bitter cab driver or related to one. Maybe if you/your relative didn't provide shite service fr decades, this wouldn't have happened to you/them.

Its funny that people think that Taxi's are incredibly more expensive. They really aren't.
When I went to Chicago recently I used both Uber and Taxi's. I would walk outside and pull up my app to get a price and time, and then I'd ask the Taxi driver how much. For short rides the Taxi was always within $2 and occasionally it was actually less. About half the time I just paid the taxi as they were already there.
For something like Airport trips Taxi's rip people off. But for bar hopping and and big city trips, Taxi's are not really any more expensive.
ETA: The difference between Uber/ Lyft and Taxi's are that Taxi driver's are paid a net wage and Uber/ Lyft driver's see their gross pay and think its incredibly more. The other difference is Taxi's work shifts while Uber/ lyft work when they want.

The biggest issues is if you're trying to go somewhere the taxi driver doesn't want to go. That's the biggest complaint I hear about.
ETA: Actually the biggest is that their cars are usually in shitty shape and they're generally rude people.

I can assure you I am not a taxi or Uber driver. I’m guessing you’ve never been to US Tax Court or any court for thst matter to realize that there is such a thing as “being too cute” with language. Whether you hail the cab for a ride by sticking your hand out or use an app it’s still point-to-point transportation which I think falls under the purview of the taxi regs of glorious NYC. It’s really more of a lesson that rules used at one time to exclude others from a market can eventually bite you in the arse.

So I can get a cheaper ride in a nicer car with Uber and Lyft?

It would appear the law does not agree with you.

Again I think that's because its a career and they work shifts. All of these people demanding "hourly wages" are the same rude people that drive taxi's. Would you not agree?
Never experienced a taxi not wanting to go somewhere I needed but I guess with the Uber/ Lyft apps the driver knows where you need to go so that happens less. I've definitely had shitty Uber drivers though.

Always? Lol, absolutely not. I've been in some nice "taxi's" also. I've had great taxi driver's.
I'm saying the price difference is not monumentally different. People act like Taxi's are twice the price, in my experience that's not the case outside of something like an airport run.

Isn’t government involvement what gave the Taxi industry a monopoly in the first place?

You don't know where the person is going until you've arrived to pick them up. They don't want drivers discriminating based on destination.
With Uber, you can set a destination twice a day and that will filter rides in that general direction. It expires after 50 minutes. You can set a destination unlimited times in Lyft, but they expire after 15 minutes or so.

Me too, but they were still better than most cab rides I've taken.

Not always the case. If I'm going to the airport for instance I call the cab company.
Is a cabbie not allowed to turn someone down? I mean if I needed to go from BR to NOLA I'd expect if I walked outside to hail a cab they could turn me down for not wanting a 160 mile round trip.
ETA: My point in this is that all these people that are wanting to Regulate Uber/ Lyft are basically trying to make them Cab companies with an App.
Why doesn't a Cab company come up with an app, it would be a win win for those idiots that want it.

It literally is always the case. An Uber/Lyft driver will not know your destination until they've arrived to pick you up.
