But in typical Liberal fashion, they went with the scare tactics and 'your Uber driver might murder you' to barely win a vote that almost no one took part in.
That's not really what happened here. Sure, the regulation to fingerprint was touted as a safety measure, but Uber and Lyft went from winning the vote to losing it because of their actions. They annoyed the frick out of people to the point people said, frick these guys. It may have been a dumb outburst in the long run, but it wasn't undeserved.

Ride Austin isn't the only service.
There are 3/4 others.

I completely stopped drinking and driving because of them. Taxis from New Orleans don't want to come to Metairie to snatch ya boy up. What do you think I'm gonna do when I want to go out if they stop?
Other than MSY, I think it's against the law (?) for an Orleans-based taxi company to pick up in Jefferson Parish. And the same for Jefferson-based taxis, they may not pick up in Orleans.
Both sides can drop off in either parish, but I thought they couldn't pick up.

Well Red, they may as well make it illegal to drop off, because if you want a cab to even take you Uptown from the Quarter they threw a fricking fit. I had one essentially try to make us fall out of the cab by hitting the gas while the door was open. We had learned not to tell them our destination until we were in. Then they'd fake the CC machine was broken. Etc. frick cabs
It must be nice to have a life with nothing to lose so you can run your fist right through their stomach.

Gotcha. I still don't like the idea of kicking out Uber and Lyft over the fingerprinting issue. If people are uncomfortable riding with an Uber/Lyft driver, it sounds like they'd have several other options.

It's hard to explain but the vote ended up being less about the regulation and more about how Uber/Lyft campaigned. People here can tell you how they'd be hassled just hanging out with their friends to vote Ubers way. It got annoying. Can you imagine how many people you can annoy with 7 million dollars?
It was a protest vote. Not a "liberals hate freedom" vote. That doesn't change one's opinion of the effects of that vote, but someone using the same cliche is just showing their ignorance on the subject.
Btw the voters didn't "kick out Uber" they voluntarily left.
Also, Uber Eats still operates in the city

Overregulation makes a mockery of our concept that it's to protect the citizen. We're over regulated to protect specific interests or companies.

According to the pair’s findings, along with this entrepreneurial bent comes a sense of financial responsibility. Some 84 percent of Gen Z’ers identify as fiscally moderate or conservative. “This group has entered young adulthood as fiscally conservative, which I don’t think you can say about Millennials,” Grace said. “Budget cuts and the recession have been so [present] in their lives.” This sense of financial responsibility — combined with a lack of faith in government — leads to a self-deterministic mindset that looks for the root causes of social problems.

It's from a book that polled 1100 Gen Z college students.

If you want to disagree with the findings of the book, fine. But an excerpt being posted on a conservative site as opposed to a "neutral" one doesn't make a difference, unless you think that they're outright lying about the findings of the book.
And why would a "conservative propaganda" promote/falsify an increase in Libertarianism?

personally i'm glad they did it. a whole generation of stupid fricking liberals get a demonstration of the effect of stupid regulations and there are tens of thousands on the books. they also have to square it with their dislike of their unreasonable dislike of corporations squashing the little guy. i do have my problems with corporations (a recent development) but they buy pols because the alternative is getting fricked by them.

I remember, before I left - there was some confusing information (or dis-information) that the proposed ordinance was confusing, in regards to the fingerprint thing
something along the lines, that since the Uber drivers were independent contractors, "signing in" and "signing out" at will, they would have to get some sort of electronic clearance via the fingerprint/background check thing, every time they tried to login to start driving.
I have no clue if that was propaganda, true misunderstanding or purposeful drama from the local media to drive clicks
dont think this was all about "safety" either - Yellow Cab (who, btw is the ONLY cab company in Austin) was lobbying pretty hard for anything to frustrate Uber/Lyft. They even got the city to take some prime street parking and designate it for "taxi stand only" - which is complete bullshite

A book can't be propaganda? Read this quote from the book:
"Our findings indicate that nearly three-quarters of them are very concerned about limitations on personal freedom and do not want the government to control gun ownership, access to abortion, euthanasia, and marriage, reflecting more of a libertarian viewpoint."
The authors make the interpretation this is a libertarian viewpoint. From my perspective, It's a liberal viewpoint with gun ownership being the outlier. How they got libertarian out of this I don't know.

They polled people and wrote about the results. Maybe they posed questions to get pro-freedom responses from the students. I don't know, and I don't care to spend money to find out.
And if the book is propaganda, again, why would a "conservative propaganda" website promote "libertarian propaganda?"

Each one of those social stances fall in line with typical libertarian stances. Combined with:
quote:

then I don't know what more reasoning you want for the "Gen Z is leaning libertarian" conclusion.

no slant here!
SXSW has been a shite show for years now. Uber and Lyft not being around doesnt change that at all.

Baton Rouge is on the verge of becoming the new Jackson. I'd say nothing the liberals and hippies can do is worse than what your racist mayor and her cronies are about to do to poor Baton Rouge.
