Some groups just are not cut out for warfare. Some groups were built for it and then have thousands of years of experience being savages.

India and Pakistan fought wars in 1965 and 1971 which were short but intense and involved large scale mechanized formations. The 1965 war featured the largest tank battle since the WWII battle of Kursk. These guys are not a first world military, but they're better trained, armed and motivated than the Iraqis were.
The hand to hand combat is born of a reluctance by both sides to be the first to escalate to what is sure to be a very ugly all out conflict.
Side note: India also has a dispute with China over lines on a map, which sometimes boils over into violence. It would not be surprising for China to insert itself into this somehow.
